A Fourth Stieg Larsson Book?

We might have to stop referring to Stieg Larsson’s bestselling Millennium books as a trilogy because there is new information about a possible 4th book featuring Lisbeth Salander and Mikael Blomqvist. It’s long been reported that Larsson had a partially completed manuscript at the time of his death, and now a friend of his, John-Henri Holmberg, has come forward with an email he received from Larsson in 2004. Holmberg told the AP of the 4th book, “The plot is set 120 kilometers north of Sachs Harbour [Canada], at Banks Island in the month of September” and “According to the synopsis it should be 440 pages.” In the email, sent about a month before Larsson’s death, he says he had finished about 320 pages.

Larsson’s longtime partner, Eva Gabrielsson, is said to have the laptop with the manuscript, although she won’t comment. She’s engaged in a legal battle with Larsson’s father and brother, who inherited his estate because Swedish law doesn’t recognize common-law marriages. Gabrielsson worked closely with Larsson on the first three books and could, theoretically, complete the 4th novel. Holmberg speculates that Larsson probably had a detailed outline of the 4th book, which would help this process. He also comments that they book would need to be published soon rather than later, while there’s still interest in the Millennium series.

There’s so much real-life drama and mystery surrounding these books, and I think that just adds to their popularity. Stay tuned to see how all this plays out.
