Penguin has announced the release of a multimedia version of Ken Follett’s The Pillars of the Earth. This ebook version of Pillars will be enhanced with video from the Starz miniseries based on the book. It will be available as an app for the iPad, iPhone, and iPod Touch, and will cost $12.99.
The Amplified Edition of The Pillars of the Earth (as Penguin is calling it) will launch with 69 video clips—11 from the Starz miniseries—that include Ken Follett’s video diary on the making of the TV series and interviews with the actors. The miniseries debuts on July 23 and will air for eight weeks on Starz. Each week, new video clips will be available for download immediately after the show airs. By the end of the series, the app will contain about 88 videos.
Another cool feature on the app is a character tree that you can access at any time for more information about a particular character. I think this is an awesome idea for a book like Pillars that is about so many different people. I wish I had this feature when I read the book because remembering who’s who was sometimes a challenge.
My experiences with other multimedia books have been really positive and I can see where Pillars would really lend itself to that format. Although, while I think it is a great fit for the iPad, Pillars is a really LONG book and I can’t imagine reading it on an iPhone or iPod. My eyes hurt just thinking about that.
Amie and I love this book and we are both super excited about the Pillars miniseries. It premieres Friday, July 23, on Starz.
