Choose Your Own Adventure Books Now on the iPad

If you are a child of the 80s, you probably read at least one Choose Your Own Adventure book (when you weren’t playing with your Cabbage Patch doll or your Atari). A whole new generation of kids is about to discover the fun of these interactive books thanks to a new app for the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. The classic stories have been modernized by one of the original authors, Edward Packard, and renamed to “U-Ventures” due to a trademark issue. Return to the Cave of Time is available now in the iTunes store, and Through the Black Hole and The Forbidden Castle will be released soon.

Rather than flipping pages every time you are offered a choice, the app allows the user to tap the screen to select his or her choice. The app also has music and other sound effects. The only downside I can see is that, unlike when we were kids, you won’t be able to cheat by peeking at both choices. But seriously, this seems like the perfect medium for the Choose Your Own Adventure type books. I never really thought about it before, but they were slightly ahead of their time. I mean, to have interactive books before most of us had even heard of the Internet or hyperlinks was pretty cool and probably accounted for their popularity. Do you think the new app will be as popular with kids? Or will nostalgic adults be the ones downloading it?
