Amazon’s New Kindles Start Shipping Today

Amazon announced this morning that their new Kindles will start shipping today, two days ahead of schedule, if you were one of the first to pre-order. Currently, the Kindle 3G is sold out and if you were to order today, Amazon says it won’t ship until September 17th.

Amazon also announced that the third-generation Kindles are their fastest-selling ever. In the four weeks since the introduction of the new Kindles, customers ordered more Kindles on Amazon.com and Amazon.co.uk combined than any other product. “Kindle is the best-selling product on Amazon.com for two years running and our new generation Kindles are continuing that momentum,” said Steven Kessel, senior vice president, Amazon Kindle.

The new $139 Kindle has an electronic-ink screen with a 21 percent smaller body while still keeping the same 6-inch-size reading area, 15 percent lighter weight at just 8.5 ounces, 20 percent faster page turns, up to one month of battery life with wireless off, double the storage to 3,500 books, no glare even in bright sunlight, and built-in Wi-Fi. The Kindle 3G with all of these new features plus free 3G wireless is $189.

All these new Kindle owners are going to want to buy ebooks, and Amazon says they have the largest selection of any retailer. The US Kindle store currently offers more than 670,000 books.

So did you pre-order one of the new Kindles? Has yours shipped yet? Let me know in the comments.
