What’s the Scariest Book You’ve Ever Read?

Halloween will be here in just a few days, which means there is no better time than now to curl up with a scary book. If you need a few suggestions, Goodreads users voted on the scariest book they’ve ever read, and here are the top ten:

1. It by Stephen King
2. The Shining by Stephen King
3. Salem’s Lot by Stephen King
4. Pet Sematary by Stephen King
5. The Exorcist by William Peter Blatty
6. Afraid by Jack Kilborn
7. House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski
8. The Ruins by Scott Smith
9. Helter Skelter: The True Story of the Manson Murders by Vincent Bugliosi and Curt Gentry
10. The Stand by Stephen King

It’s no surprise that Stephen King dominates this list. I’ve never read It because it was once described to me as “effing clowns in sewer drains,” and I’m a big wuss. If you’ve read It, do you think it’s King’s scariest story?

The one book on the list I’ve read is The Ruins, and it totally freaked me out. It’s about a group of tourists who get stranded in the Mexican jungle and have to fight for their survival. It’s a little gory, but mostly I remember having this intense feeling of dread while I was reading it.

Have you read any of these books? Which scary book would you add to the list?
