Catherine Hardwicke to Direct THE MAZE RUNNER Movie?

Catherine Hardwicke, known to many of us as the director of Twilight, is in negotiations to direct the movie adaptation of James Dashner’s The Maze Runner. It could be the launch of another teen franchise for Hardwicke, as the book is the first in a trilogy.

The Maze Runner (read our review here) is more like a male version of The Hunger Games than like Twilight. The dystopian YA novel is about Thomas, a teenage boy who wakes up in an elevator with no memory of how he got there. He ends up in the Glade, “a large, open expanse surrounded by stone walls.” The group of boys who live there, like Thomas, have no memory of life before the Glade. They boys have a comfortable routine—they grow their own food and search daily for a way out of the maze—until a girl arrives in the Glade and changes everything. Check out this incredibly well done book trailer to get a sense of what the book is about. It’s much darker than recent teen movie adaptations like Twilight and Percy Jackson. The second book in the trilogy, The Scorch Trials, was released in October.

According to IndieWire, James Dashner is also writing the movie script, which is certainly good news for fans of the books.

So what do you think about this Maze Runner news? Who do you think should play Thomas? I can see Logan Lerman (Percy Jackson) in the role. Leave your suggestions in the comments!
