iPad Users Cutting Newspaper Subscriptions

The Apple iPad is increasing the decline in newspaper subscriptions, but could also lead to the salvation of newspaper subscriptions. The rate at which iPad owners are cutting newspaper subscriptions was brought to light in a recent survey conducted by the Donald W. Reynolds Journalism Institute at the University of Missouri.

The results of the survey, which included 1,600 participants, showed that 84.4% of the participants were turning to their iPad for breaking news and information more than any other outlet. In addition, roughly 78% of those surveyed said they used their iPad for a half hour or more each day, while nearly 49.5% spent more than an hour each day on their device.

While the iPad is leading to a huge decline in newspaper subscriptions, with 58.1% of respondents intending to cancel their subscriptions, there is hope for the future. A number of media outlets, including Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp, are planning iPad only subscription news services.
