Amazon’s Author Central To Start Sharing Sales Data With Authors

Bookselling giant Amazon is doing something for authors that their publishers have failed to do so far. Starting last Thursday, Amazon will make the Nielsen BookScan service available to authors on its website Author Central.

Under normal circumstances, authors are forced to wait for up to six months to receive royalty statements from their publishers. These statements also include data on their book sales. Now however, those authors who sign up for Amazon’s free author portal will have access to Nielsen BookScan data with just a one month lag on the information.

Authors will receive a map of the country showing where their books are hot and cold. The information includes sales data from retailers such as Target and Barnes & Noble as well as some independent booksellers, and Amazon.com. Amazon estimates that the data from the service reflects 75% of book sales and does not include sales of eBooks.
