The Kindle e-book reader app from Amazon is now available in the Mac App Store for the first time. The availability of the app at the Mac App Store is the second piece of significant news from Amazon this week regarding the Kindle.

The version of the Kindle e-book reader now available at the Mac App Store is the same version that to date has only been available directly from Amazon. The app can be downloaded for free from the Mac App Store. With Amazon on board, speculation has begun as to whether other big brands such as Microsoft Windows and Adobe could be next.

In other Amazon news, the Kindle app for the iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch has received an update allowing users to conduct background downloads of books for devices running iOS 4. The update also allows for access to public domain books from sources such as Project Gutenberg.
