DIYA Website Encourages Diversity in YA Books

Young-adult fiction authors, Malinda Lo and Cindy Pon, have joined forces on the “Diversity in YA” (DIYA) website. According to GalleyCat, they will be featuring new books every month that embrace diversity. The project began in January, when they spotlighted nine middle-grade titles and fourteen YA books.

“DIYA is a positive, friendly gathering of readers and writers who want to see diversity in their fiction. We come from all walks of life and backgrounds, and we hope that you do, too.”

There is talk that an author tour is in the works, too. The kick off is set for May 2011 and some of the participating authors will include fantasy series novelist Holly Black, children’s writer Matt de la Peña, and graphic novel illustrator & writer Gene Luen Yang. The tour is currently scheduled make stops in five cities: San Francisco, Austin, Boston, New York City, and San Diego.
