Letters to President Obama will be Published in Book

President Obama

A new story from Yahoo.com reports that President Barack Barack Obama just might have accidentally stolen somebody’s thunder.

Obama receives a folder full of the letters every day of his presidency, all chosen from the thousands that the White House Correspondence Office receives every day. They come from Americans concerned enough about various issues (or sometimes just problems in their own lives) that they take the time to write to the president about them. And it looks like someone is going to be publishing some of those letters in a book.

Aides to the president report that Obama reads the letters as a way to stay in touch with the public and to get outside what he calls “the bubble” that is life within the White House.

Obama let the news drop when he was asked during a news conference about whether he feels the pain of Americans who are suffering in today’s economy and could be hit hard by cutbacks in social services programs including in his newly announced budget proposal.

Obama said at a news conference televised nationally — and internationally:

“Somebody is doing a book about the 10 letters that I get every day, and they came by to talk to me yesterday. What I told them is I’m so inspired by the strength and resilience of the American people, but sometimes I’m also just frustrated by the number of people out there who are struggling, and you want to help every single one individually,”

Reportedly, the book is being written by a White House spokesman and rather than being upset at his secret getting out, I’m thinking he’s probably pretty happy to get the unexpected burst of publicity.
