A DANCE WITH DRAGONS (A Song of Ice and Fire #5) Coming in July 2011

After six year of waiting, George R. R. Martin fans have reason to celebrate: the fifth book in his A Song of Ice and Fire series is scheduled to debut this summer. A Dance With Dragons will be published on July 12, 2011, and according to Martin, “it’s enormous.” The author tells Entertainment Weekly that the book will be as long as A Storm of Swords—approximately 900 pages.

Martin hasn’t actually finished writing A Dance With Dragons yet, but he assures his fans that the July 12 pub date is firm. He writes on his website:

Yes, I know. You’ve all seen publication dates before: dates in 2007, 2008, 2009. None of those were ever hard dates, however. Most of them… well, call it wishful thinking, boundless optimism, cockeyed dreams, honest mistakes, whatever you like.

This date is different. This date is real.

Barring tsunamis, general strikes, world wars, or asteroid strikes, you will have the novel in your hands on July 12. I hope you like it.

(For what it’s worth, the book’s a monster. Think A STORM OF SWORDS.)

The dragons are coming. Prepare to dance.

And hey… thanks for waiting.

The release of A Dance With Dragons will come shortly after the April 17th premiere of the Game of Thrones TV show on HBO (our friends at Daemon’s TV have more coverage of the show). Also, look for the forthcoming comic book based on the series to be released in late spring.

Synopsis of A Dance With Dragons by George R. R. Martin:

Dubbed “the American Tolkien” by Time magazine, George R. R. Martin has earned international acclaim for his monumental cycle of epic fantasy. Now the #1 New York Times bestselling author delivers the fifth book in his spellbinding landmark series—as both familiar faces and surprising new forces vie for a foothold in a fragmented empire.

In the aftermath of a colossal battle, the future of the Seven Kingdoms hangs in the balance once again—beset by newly emerging threats from every direction. In the east, Daenerys Targaryen, the last scion of House Targaryen, rules with her three dragons as queen of a city built on dust and death. But Daenerys has three times three thousand enemies, and many have set out to find her. Yet, as they gather, one young man embarks upon his own quest for the queen, with an entirely different goal in mind.

To the north lies the mammoth Wall of ice and stone—a structure only as strong as those guarding it. There, Jon Snow, 998th Lord Commander of the Night’s Watch, will face his greatest challenge yet. For he has powerful foes not only within the Watch but also beyond, in the land of the creatures of ice.

And from all corners, bitter conflicts soon reignite, intimate betrayals are perpetrated, and a grand cast of outlaws and priests, soldiers and skinchangers, nobles and slaves, will face seemingly insurmountable obstacles. Some will fail, others will grow in the strength of darkness. But in a time of rising restlessness, the tides of destiny and politics will lead inevitably to the greatest dance of all. . . .
