MARCEL THE SHELL WITH SHOES ON Becoming Picture Book

Marcel the Shell

MARCEL THE SHELL WITH SHOES ON is a web video created by Jenny Slate and Dean Fleischer-Camp that debuted late last year and has been viewed almost eight million times. It also won the “Best Animated Short” award at the 2010 AFI Fest. Now Publishers Weekly reports that Slate and Fleischer-Camp are turning the video into a picture book to be published by Razorbill.

The video shows the one wiggly-eyed shell in pink sneakers explain his tiny life in a squeaky voice (provided by Slate). He talks about hang gliding on a Dorito and his pet lint ball. The book is expected to track the video and will contain oil paintings based on photos of Marcel at home.

Razorbill president and publisher Ben Schrank said,

“Everybody at Razorbill and Penguin is just as in love with Marcel as the fans are that have made him an Internet sensation. When we found out that Jenny and Dean wanted to write a picture book we were ecstatic and jumped at the opportunity to work with such a brilliant and enthusiastic pair of young authors. We are determined to turn Marcel into a classic picture book character, alongside Ferdinand the Bull and the Very Hungry Caterpillar.”

Along with the Marcel the Shell with Shoes On picture book, there will also be an interactive version and a digital download voiced by Slate.
