Jennifer Lawrence Cast as Katniss in THE HUNGER GAMES Movie

Well, Hunger Games fans, we have our Katniss Everdeen: 20-year-old Academy Award nominated actress Jennifer Lawrence. The Wrap is reporting that Lawrence has officially signed on for the lead role in The Hunger Games movie, based on the first book in Suzanne Collins’ bestselling YA series.

Fans who have been eagerly awaiting this casting news have been quick to point out that Lawrence doesn’t meet the physical description of Katniss in the books. Katniss is described as having olive skin, black hair, and gray eyes. And at 20, Lawrence is older than 16-year-old Katniss.

Honestly, I don’t think casting a slightly older actress as Katniss is necessarily a bad thing. The love triangle between Katniss, Peeta, and Gale is epic, and that is harder to pull off with teenage actors. I think older actors also means the movie will appeal to a wider audience. I’m sure the rest of the cast will be announced very soon, but he rumor is that Alex Pettyfer is in contention for the role of Peeta, as well as Josh Hutcherson (The Kids Are All Right, Bridge to Terabithia) and Hunter Parrish (Weeds).

It’s nice when a movie character matches the image you created in your head while reading a book, but I don’t think that’s the most important factor. Acting ability is extremely important as well. I haven’t seen Jennifer Lawrence’s Oscar-nominated performance in Winter’s Bone, but by all accounts the actress stood out in the gritty movie. That’s good news since the Hunger Games movie will undoubtedly be gritty and dark, and it will take a talented actress to pull off the complexity of Katniss.

So what do you think about the casting of Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss? Are you happy? Or disappointed? Who do you want to see as Peeta and Gale?
