Ben Affleck in Talks to Play THE GREAT GATSBY’s Tom Buchanan

The Great Gatsby

Ben Affleck as Tom Buchanan? I could see that, and apparently, so can Baz Luhrmann because Deadline reports that Affleck is in talks to join Lurhmann’s 3D adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s THE GREAT GATSBY.

A rich and shallow man, Tom Buchanan is the philandering husband of Daisy, who will be played by Carey Mulligan (An Education). Also on board the film are Leonardo DiCaprio as Jay Gatsby and Tobey Maguire as Nick Carraway.

The only wrinkle to casting Affleck is that he is scheduled to direct his next film, Argo, about the 1979 Iran Hostage Crisis, this fall, which is when Luhrmann plans to shoot The Great Gatsby in Australia. Because both films are at Warner Bros., it is expected the conflict can be resolved.

Affleck was last seen in the recession dram The Company Men.

How do you think this adaptation of The Great Gatsby is shaping up so far?
