THE HUNGER GAMES Finds Katniss’ Mom and a Possible Haymitch

THE HUNGER GAMES seems to be taking a bit of a break from casting tributes and is now focusing on filling the adult roles. Lionsgate has announced that Caprica‘s Paula Malcomson will play Katniss and Prim’s mother, with whom Katniss has a complicated relationship.

Producer Nina Jacobson said of the choice,

“Katniss and Prim’s mother has come back from the depths of despair. Her husband has been killed, resources are scarce and she must live in fear that either one of her daughters could be forced to participate in the Hunger Games. Needless to say, we needed an actress with some gravitas–someone who could really transport herself, and audiences, to a place as tough as District 12. Paula has appeared in some really top notch TV shows that are both extremely gritty and extremely imaginative, and she was the perfect choice for this role.”

Less official but perhaps more interesting is that, according to Vulture, John C. Reilly is in talks to play Haymitch Abernathy, the only living District 12 winner of The Hunger Games. Now a middle-aged alcoholic, Haymitch serves as mentor and coach to Katniss and Peeta. It’s an incredibly important role and one that has been debated endlessly online.

A true character actor, Reilly has appeared in more than fifty films and in 2002, he had roles in three films nominated for the Best Picture Academy Award: Gangs of New York, The Hours, and Chicago. Notable films he has in the pipeline include We Need to Talk about Kevin and God of Carnage.

So, do you like these Hunger Games casting choices? I think Paula Malcomson is a great choice for Katniss’ mom and the more I picture John C. Reilly as Haymitch, the more I like it. We’d love to get your reactions in the comments, so please let us know what you think.
