Barnes & Noble Gives Nook Color a Major Update

Barnes & Noble announced yesterday that the Nook Color is getting a major software update that will add full-featured email, apps, and Flash support for web browsing. Nook Color v1.2 will be automatically downloaded to devices that are registered and connected to Wi-Fi over the coming weeks. If you want to update your Nook Color immediately, you can manually download v1.2 at

The Nook App store has more than 125 apps such as Angry Birds, Goodreads, Epicurious, Pandora, and Uno. Barnes & Noble is also creating its own social network with its Nook Friends app. The app allows Nook users to connect, review/recommend books, and share quotes. The really cool thing is that Nook Friends also allows users to see which books their friends have available for sharing, which should make it easier for readers to swap books.

Another cool feature is new software that it will allow authors to sign a book on your Nook Color. According to Good eReader, the Autography software makes it possible for an author to sign the touch screen with a stylus. The signature is then saved on the ebook. How cool is that? Author and illustrator Sandra Boynton will be the first author to publicly try out this technology on Monday, May 2, at 7:00 PM at a Barnes & Noble in New York City.

So have you tried out the new features on Nook Color? What did you think of the update? I’m really curious to hear how the Nook Color compares to the iPad.
