Walmart to Begin Selling Kindle
The Kindle is coming to Walmart. Amazon announced via its Kindle Daily Post last week that both the Kindle 3G and Kindle with Special Offers would available in over 3200 Walmart stores nationwide at some point this week. The prices will match Amazon’s, so the 3G will retail at $189 and the Special Offers for $114.
The only real surprise about this, I think, is that it hasn’t happened sooner. The Kindle is already on sale at stores like Best Buy, Target, Staples, and Best Buy and Walmart already stocks the Nook, Kobo, and Sony eReaders, not to mention the iPad.
The best benefit of Walmart selling the Kindle is that people hesitant about buying an eReader or confused about which one to choose will be able to go to their local Walmart and see (though unfortunately probably not touch) all the eReaders in one place and get a gauge as to which one would best suit what you’re looking for.
A part of me can’t help but think that Amazon teaming with Walmart to sell the Kindle lends credence to the rumors that Amazon is getting close to releasing a tablet because now they will have an open channel for distributing said tablet right next to the iPad in Walmart.
What do you think of Walmart selling the Kindle? Would you buy the eReader of your choice there? Could this be one of the final nails in the coffin of printed books?
