Barnes & Noble Launching New Nook?

It seems that Barnes & Noble is announcing a new ereader next week. Mashable reports that the bookselling chain has invited reporters to an event on Tuesday May 24, the same date referred to in an SEC filing regarding “the launch of a new ereader device.”

The big question is what will set this new ereader apart from the current Nook and Nook Color? The Nook Color just got a big update that made it much more tablet-like, so speculation is that this new ereader will be a lower-budget model designed to compete directly with Amazon’s Kindle. Think small and monochrome. For all we know, it could even be something ad-supported like Amazon’s new Kindle with Special Offers because Barnes & Noble representatives aren’t talking.

While the Nook has so far been very successful for Barnes & Noble, now capturing, according to Janney Capital Markets analyst David Strasser, 28% of the ereader market share, there is still plenty of room for improvement. The Kindle currently has around a 40% market share, down from a high in the sixties.

What would you want to see in a new Nook? Let us know in the comments.

Love my b&w Nook and want to stick with e-ink, but the touch screen strip is an indulgence that makes the unit too pricey for what it does. I’m loving the idea of a simple and cheap e-ink Nook, and if it’s cheap enough I’m betting that a lot of hardcore eReader users will opt to own both a basic Nook and a Nook Color.
