THE HUNGER GAMES Casting Round-Up Including Lenny Kravitz as Cinna
Since THE HUNGER GAMES has now begun shooting, it makes sense that the last big roles are quickly being filled. First up, Lionsgate announced that Grammy Award-winning rocker Lenny Kravitz has signed on to play Katniss’ warm stylist whose mild manner belies an outrageous talent shown in his show-stopping designs like Katniss’ immediately famous “Girl on Fire” dress.
While Kravitz is mostly known for his musical talent, he has begun forging an acting career, and The Hunger Games director Gary Ross said,
“When I saw Lenny’s work in Precious I was just knocked out. It was quiet and strong and understated and open hearted; all qualities which define [Cinna]. I’m really looking forward to this ride.”
Continuing to mix famous faces with relative unknowns, the role of Peeta’s stylist Portia, who works closely with Cinna so they can coordinate Katniss and Peeta’s outfits, has gone to Latarsha Rose, who mostly has TV guest starring roles on her resume. Brooke Bundy, whose first film Without hit Slamdance this year, will play Octavia, a member of Cinna’s prep team who grows very close to Katniss.
Veteran character actor Toby Jones has been tapped to play the host and narrator of the 74th Hunger Games alongside Stanley Tucci’s Caesar. Jones will next be seen in Captain America: The First Avenger and he was the voice of Dobby in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets and The Deathly Hallows Part 1 (sniff).
The only pivotal role left to cast is President Snow, and I can’t wait to hear who that will be. I absolutely love Lenny Kravitz as Cinna. It’s a bit off the beaten path, which is exactly as it should be.
The Hunger Games will be released to theaters March 23, 2012. You can catch up on all our The Hunger Games coverage here.
