The Final Artemis Fowl Book, THE LAST GUARDIAN, Coming Next Summer

Bestselling author Eoin Colfer recently signed a three-book deal with Disney-Hyperion Books, an imprint of Disney Publishing Worldwide. Part of the deal includes the eighth and final installment of the Artemis Fowl series, The Last Guardian. The book will be published in Summer 2012.

Disney also bought two books in a brand new series called W.A.R.P. The first book will be called The Reluctant Assassin and will be published in Winter 2013. Here’s more about W.A.R.P.:

The assassin of the title is young Riley, who has fallen into the FBI’s W.A.R.P. – Witness Anonymous Relocation Program -after a murderous escapade with a Victorian illusionist. Riley is transported to modern-day London, where he must both evade the illusionist and keep him from returning to Victorian times, where, with his new knowledge of all things scientific and technological, he could literally change the world.

Colfer said in a statement, “W.A.R.P. is an exciting new venture for me that combines a love of Victorian crime fiction, which I developed from reading Sherlock Holmes, and my fascination with science fiction, which has always been a hallmark of my books W.A.R.P. is dark and funny and hopefully thrilling, and I am over the moon that Disney-Hyperion Books is prepared to journey into the past and future with me.”

Well, we knew that Colfer was wrapping up the Artemis Fowl series, but now we know the last book is officially called The Last Guardian. In an interview last year, Colfer said he wanted to end the series with Artemis facing a choice:

“He will be faced with a choice where he can be kind to somebody and he won’t gain anything, or he can be unkind and he will find a million dollars in a suitcase, and he will choose the nice way, and that will be the end,” he explained. “That’s how I’m going to finish it, on a very simple choice.”

What would you like to see happen in the final book? Are you sad to see the series end?

I’m crazy sad that it’s gonna end :( I love the Artemis Fowl books, they’re amazing! And I soooo hope that something romantic happens with Artemis and Holly in the eighth book! I was almost hyperventilating when they kissed in the Time Paradox.
LOL JK! But I was pretty excited :L
I heard they’re gonna make a movie. I hope Artemis will look as hot as he sounds hehehehe :*) All black floppy hair and blue eyes…ooshh.

It’s a little bit sad that the series is going to end, but I’m really excited on finding out what’s going to happen to Artemis. It’s pretty good, seeing Artemis started out as a criminal (which I think was pretty awesome, being bad’s fun too) and how he’s going to end up in Book 8 as a good guy.

One big thing I’ve been thinking about the series: Is Artemis going to end up with Holly?I’m not really a Holly+Artemis fan. (Don’t kill me for this) I’m hoping they won’t end up with each other. I think it’s better that way–them being just friends. And no, I didn’t really care about Holly kissing Artemis in The Time Paradox. (It just grossed me out.) And waaaay creepy, Holly’s too old for him–even if fairy age differs from human age. Anyway, before you guys grab your pitchforks and hunt me down, I just want to say that I’m really excited about the last book and I hope the movie comes out soon. Okay, now I’m gonna run.

I actually agree with you, I am not a Holly and Artemis fan. I love them both and I love them as friends but I can’t picture them romantically and it weirds me out when they have those oddly romantic moments but it seems the series is heading in the direction of them being more than just friends if the last two books or anything to go by.

I hope the ending isn’t anything to do with mind wipes. As he said in the Atlantis Complex, that the magic and extra fairy knowledge was what caused it so they might cure him through mind wipes. I really hope not, that would suck.

i dont want artemis and holly to go out ewww there a different species i mean they come on. isnt it more of a brotherly sisterly love thing?

    • Kirbyderbygirl

No, its not, didn’t you read the last few books?

I feel an empty hole opening up inside when I know of this a few months ago, but another part of me knows this would come, and should come; the series has been stretched too far from its intended stop in Book 3, and though it’s still an infinite thrill to read, I feel that it’s losing some of its magic and direction in some way (I’m getting a bit tired of Opal, too, and I’m a little put off that Opal might be coming back in The Last Guardian; the series needs to move on to new villains. and Artemis barely has any role in the latest book, unlike in the earlier books, so I’m hoping he would return alive and kicking once more. ^^)

We grew up with Artemis and we love him. We’ll miss him badly when his stories end, but I think maybe this is the best for everyone. I’ll try to accept it and cherish this series as a wonderful childhood memory forever.

Ps. I’ll be very happy if Mr.Colfer ends everything nicely; Artemis becomes a nice boy and works for the good of the world. He keeps in contact with his fairy friends. And I would love occasional specials!

I’m cheering for some more romance between Artemis and Holly, but I know it would be a tough challenge, seeing the odds stacked against them.

I’m really sad to see the Artemis Fowl books end, just like everyone on this page. I don’t understand the fuss about Artemis and Holly being a (somewhat) different species. Didn’t you read The Opal Deception??? Remember how Opal became a Mud Girl- I mean human? Anyways, I obviously think that the aforementioned pair should end up together. But I wonder how Artemis is going to be cured?
