DON’T BREATHE A WORD By Jennifer McMahon [Review]
I don’t like to give rave reviews. In my opinion, there is always something in a novel that could have been done differently, or even a little better. That being said, to put it in simple terms, DON’T BREATHE A WORD By Jennifer McMahon ROCKED.
When I say it rocked (great phrase for a reviewer to use, right?), I mean it BLEW ME AWAY. The story alone is something that makes you tilt your head and say “huh?” but once you open up to the first page, I guarantee you will be hooked.
Fifteen years ago, a little girl named Lisa went into the woods behind her house and never came out. She told her younger brother, Sam that she was going to live with the King of the Fairies. Sam, of course, didn’t believe her. But when Lisa doesn’t come back, Sam starts to wonder.
Cut to 15 years later when Sam receives a strange message from someone claiming to be Lisa. Joined by his girlfriend Phoebe (who also ties into this strange web of characters), and his long lost cousin, Evie, Sam sets out to see if this person really is Lisa and where she’s been for the past 15 years.
McMahon does an EXQUISITE job at weaving a story that is so detailed, and so unsettling that you will not want to put down Don’t Breathe a Word. The pages will turn rapidly as you hungrily search for more clues to the unraveling mystery.
The characters of the story are what propel it along. Pheobe and Sam are an unlikely match, and reading about the Land of the Fairies from the perspective of a child is so unique, that I couldn’t wait to find out what happened next!
Don’t Breathe a Word is written in alternating chapters between present day, and the time period when Lisa left. It’s interesting to follow Sam and Evie through their childhood and see how the events of that summer changed them.
If you’re in the mood for a FANTASTIC read, one that will give you goosebumps, and even at times make you have to check over your shoulder to be sure you’re not being watched, Don’t Breathe a Word is the novel for you!
