Blog Tour: SONG OF THE NILE By Stephanie Dray [Review]

Song of the Nile

Once again Stephanie Dray hits one out of the park with SONG OF THE NILE, the continuation to her first novel Lily of the Nile.

We pick up with Selene, the daughter of Cleopatra who was kidnapped and taken from Egypt to Rome when she was a child. Now 14, Selene is desperate to get back to Egypt. So much in fact that she ends up marrying a handpicked husband that sweeps her away to Africa to help him rule his people.

There are a few hitches – Selene is in love with her twin brother, she doesn’t really want to head to Africa with Juba, and Octavian hasn’t been the best father figure in the world. Overall, Selene’s life has pretty much sucked since she was a child.

However, she overcomes and grows up beautifully during Song of the Nile. Told from Selene’s perspective, we get to see this little girl grow into a capable and beautiful queen – one that will return to Egypt and rule alongside her brother. Or will she?

Despite her trepidation, Selene begins to rule in Africa flawlessly. She becomes friends with her people and they all see her as a decent honest Queen. She brings monuments and artistry to Africa; and makes
it most reminiscent of Egypt. One good thing does come of her marriage to Juba – he tends to leave her alone since he knows that Selene is not in love with him. Because of this, Selene becomes a Queen that has the power to rule over any people – and have them trust her implicitly.

Personally, I love the Nile books and am THRILLED that this is turning into a series. The characters are interesting, they’re deep, and they actually transform on the page. Throw in a little magic (Selene is known for being a sorceress) and I was hooked.

I loved Lily of the Nile and am really, REALLY pleased to say that Song of the Nile is as good, if not better than its predecessor. If you’re looking for a great historical fiction book, pick up Song of the Nile.
