JACOB T. MARLEY By R. William Bennett [Review]
With the Christmas season right around the corner (anyone start their shopping yet??), may I present to you a book that will now be considered an annual “Holiday” read in my house. JACOB T. MARLEY takes the classic story of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, but puts a spin on it. Instead of following Ebenezer Scrooge, we actually get to take a look into the life (and afterlife) of Jacob Marley. Who hasn’t wondered exactly what happened with Scrooge’s partner in crime?
Jacob T. Marley answers this question and more. Through William Bennett’s Dickens like writing style, it was very easy to fall into the story and get lost within the pages. Bennett does an exquisite job of taking a small, but EXTREMELY important character from A Christmas Carol and breathing life into his back story. Why was Scrooge allowed to change his ways, but Marley was damned for all eternity to carry the weight of his sins?
There was a portion of Jacob T. Marley that stuck with me through the entire novel: “What a wretched man, Marley thought. Whatever in the world made him? Whether it was seconds or minutes, Marley did not know, but he paused so completely he thought his heart had stopped beating. I did, were his own words that came to him. I did. I made Ebenezer Scrooge.” In this sentence, Marley realizes the crime he committed against Scrooge and knows that he needs to redeem himself, if only to save his partner.
Through the pages of this novel we get to see Marley wandering the earth as a lost spirit, and what he gets to contemplate for those seven years between his death and his visit to Scrooge. Again, Bennett’s writing style really helps to move the novel along, and I found myself thinking that I was reading a Dickens novel as I flew through the pages.
A great Christmas story, and one that should be read in conjunction with A Christmas Carol. Jacob T. Marley is very reminiscent of what Wicked did for The Wizard of Oz. You won’t be disappointed in this book, and it’s the perfect time of year to grab a copy and cozy up with a mug of hot chocolate!
