“It began peacefully enough, on one of Florida’s private islands.”

At a reception hosted by a notorious Russian black marketeer, Doc Ford uses darkness, and his friend Tomlinson, as cover to get an underwater look at the billionaire’s yacht. By the time Ford surfaces, everything has changed.

Environmental extremists have taken control of the island. Or are they thugs hired by the Russian’s competitors? Whatever the motive, they have herded everyone together and threatened to kill one hostage every hour until midnight unless their demands are met-at which point they will just blow everybody up.

Electronic jammers make communications with the outside world impossible. The only hope of avoiding terrible consequences: The militants do not know Ford’s capabilities, or that he is still on the loose. But that situation won’t last for long . . . and the clock is ticking.

A stunning new thriller from the father of Christian fiction—a grieving husband encounters a teen identical to his dead wife…in face, name, and magical skills.Dane and Mandy Collins have been a popular magic act for close to 30 years. In their late fifties, they plan to retire but their plans are devastated by a fiery car wreck. Dane awakens in a hospital and learns that Mandy is dead. As he reflects on their life together and how they first met at a magic show, we see nineteen-year-old Mandy in a flashback:
Mandy and two friends are visiting a county fair in Idaho when they happen upon a theater where a magician will be doing a show in an hour. While waiting to see the show, young Mandy appears to falls asleep, then awakes abruptly. She fell asleep in 1970; it is now 2010. Distraught, she is picked up by security personnel. She winds up in a mental hospital, where no one is sure who she is or where she came from.?

Mandy escapes from the hospital. Alone, penniless, and mystified by her circumstances, she takes shelter with a charitable family and begins eking out a dime by performing magic for anyone who will stop, watch, and leave a tip. She winds up doing a weekly magic act at a local coffeehouse.

A friend tells Dane there’s an act he ought to see. Dane has retired but agrees to watch the girl perform. He is transfixed by the magic he sees, illusions that even he, a seasoned professional, cannot readily explain. But more than anything, he is emotionally devastated by this nineteen-year-old who is in every respect identical to the young beauty he first met some forty years earlier.

When Mandy and Dane reunite, they must decide what their future is…and uncover the conspiracy behind their meeting; the strange, supernatural bent to Mandy’s magic; and who is following them.?

From Kathryn Harrison, one of America’s most admired literary voices, comes a gorgeously written, enthralling novel set in the final days of Russia’s Romanov Empire.

St. Petersburg, 1917. After Rasputin’s body is pulled from the icy waters of the Neva River, his eighteen-year-old daughter, Masha, is sent to live at the imperial palace with Tsar Nikolay and his family—including the headstrong Prince Alyosha. Desperately hoping that Masha has inherited Rasputin’s miraculous healing powers, Tsarina Alexandra asks her to tend to Aloysha, who suffers from hemophilia, a blood disease that keeps the boy confined to his sickbed, lest a simple scrape or bump prove fatal.

Two months after Masha arrives at the palace, the tsar is forced to abdicate, and Bolsheviks place the royal family under house arrest. As Russia descends into civil war, Masha and Alyosha grieve the loss of their former lives, finding solace in each other’s company. To escape the confinement of the palace, they tell stories—some embellished and some entirely imagined—about Nikolay and Alexandra’s courtship, Rasputin’s many exploits, and the wild and wonderful country on the brink of an irrevocable transformation. In the worlds of their imagination, the weak become strong, legend becomes fact, and a future that will never come to pass feels close at hand.

It starts with a whisper: “It’s time for you to know who you are…”

Violet Eden dreads her seventeenth birthday. After all, it’s hard to get too excited about the day that marks the anniversary of your mother’s death. As if that wasn’t enough, disturbing dreams haunt her sleep and leave her with very real injuries. There’s a dark tattoo weaving its way up her arms that wasn’t there before.

Violet is determined to get some answers, but nothing could have prepared her for the truth. The guy she thought she could fall in love with has been keeping his identity a secret: he’s only half-human—oh, and same goes for her.

A centuries-old battle between fallen angels and the protectors of humanity has chosen its new warrior. It’s a fight Violet doesn’t want, but she lives her life by two rules: don’t run and don’t quit. When angels seek vengeance and humans are the warriors, you could do a lot worse than betting on Violet Eden…

Haven Terra is a brainy, shy high school outcast. But everything begins to change when she turns sixteen. Along with her best friend Dante and their quiet and brilliant classmate Lance, she is awarded a prestigious internship in the big city— Chicago—and is sent to live and work at a swanky and stylish hotel under the watchful eyes of a group of gorgeous and shockingly young-looking strangers: powerful and alluring hotel owner Aurelia Brown; her second-in-command, the dashing Lucian Grove; and their stunning but aloof staff of glamazons called The Outfit.

As Haven begins falling for Lucian, she discovers that these beautiful people are not quite what they seem.
Reminiscent of Dan Brown, this major Danish bestselling and award-winning novel centers around the mysterious murders of “good” men and women around the world, and the Danish detective who must solve the riddle—before he becomes the next victim. In Jewish scripture, there is a legend: There are thirty-six righteous people on earth. The thirty-six protect us. Without them, humanity would perish. But the thirty-six do not know they are the chosen ones.
In Beijing, a monk collapses in his chamber, dead. A fiery mark—a tattoo? a burn?—spreads across his back and down his spine. In Mumbai, a beloved economist, a man who served the poor, dies suddenly. His corpse reveals the same symbol. Similar deaths are reported around the world—the victims all humanitarians, all with the same death mark. In Venice, an enterprising Italian policeman links the deaths, tracing the evidence. Who is killing good people around the world?

In Copenhagen, police are preparing for a world climate summit when they receive the Interpol alert. The task falls to veteran detective Niels Bentzon: Find the “good people” of Denmark and warn them. But Bentzon is a man who is trained to see the worst in humanity, not the good. One by one, people are crossed off his list. He senses their secrets and wrongdoings.

Just as Bentzon is ready to give up, he meets Hannah Lund, a brilliant astrophysicist mourning the death of her son and the implosion of her marriage. With Hannah’s help, Bentzon begins to piece together the puzzle of these far-flung deaths. A pattern emerges. It is, they realize, a perfectly executed plan of murder. There have been thirty-four deaths—two more to come if the legend is true. According to the pattern, Bentzon and Hannah can predict the time and place of the final two murders. The deaths will occur in Venice and Copenhagen. And the time is now.

They say opposites attract. And in the case of werewolves Anna Latham and Charles Cornick, they mate. The son-and enforcer-of the leader of the North American werewolves, Charles is a dominant alpha. While Anna, an omega, has the rare ability to calm others of her kind.

Now that the werewolves have revealed themselves to humans, they can’t afford any bad publicity. Infractions that could have been overlooked in the past must now be punished, and the strain of doing his father’s dirty work is taking a toll on Charles.

Nevertheless, Charles and Anna are sent to Boston, when the FBI requests the pack’s help on a local serial killer case.
On the ocean liner “Mauretania,” two European scientists with a dramatic new invention are barely rescued from abduction by the Van Dorn Detective Agency’s intrepid chief investigator, Isaac Bell. Unfortunately, they are not so lucky the second time. The thugs attack again-and this time one of the scientists dies. What are they holding that is so precious? Only something that will revolutionize business and popular culture-and perhaps something more.

For war clouds are looming, and a ruthless espionage agent has spotted a priceless opportunity to give the Germans an edge.

I pretty much read the whole Evernight series back to back, which might have not been the best idea, since by the end I think I was getting a bit tired of it, especially since I wasn’t in love with the series in the first place. And so it took some time for me to get through Afterlife, but I’m glad I finished because there were some good moments and it did give closure to the series, a good one.

If you have read the first three books of the Evernight series, then you know book 3 , Hourglass ended with Bianca and Balthazar waiting for Lucas to wake up as a vampire.

Afterlife starts right where Hourglass ended. Lucas wakes up as a vampire and a thirst for blood he cannot quench. Faced with impossible circumstances, Bianca and Lucas decide to go back where they never thought they would: Evernight Academy. With Lucas a vampire now, they know Mrs. Bethany will have to grant him sanctuary, however with Bianca being a wraith now, things get a bit complicated when they realize Evernight Academy might not be the safest place for her. And let’s not forget Charity, who still has her grip on Lucas.

If you’ve been a fan of the Evernight series, then you’re definitely going to enjoy Afterlife. Not only do you get to reunite with the characters that you have come to know and love, the series ends in quite the unexpected yet very satisfying way.

I personally have had issues with the series here and there, Bianca can be a bit irritating to me and I couldn’t really relate to her. In addition, I wasn’t as involved in the love story between her and Lucas, but by book four I had accepted that fact and wasn’t as bothered with it, because I knew what I was reading. And so with that in mind, I did find Afterlife entertaining and it is probably my favorite book of the series.

Throughout the book, a lot of different events occur which manages to grab and keep your attention throughout making this an enjoyable read. There isn’t much more to say without spoiling what happens so I’ll end with saying this:

You know this series, you have come to love this series, and Afterlife is the perfect ending to the series you have been waiting for. So make sure you get yourself a copy.

ONCE IN A FULL MOON

Author: Ellen Schreiber

Synopsis: An accessible and clean paranormal series about werewolves—and the popular girl who loves one.

Celeste hangs with the popular crowd at Legend’s Run High and is being wooed by Nash Hunter, the football quarterback, but doesn’t really feel that she belongs. She only comes in contact with the new and enigmatic student, Brandon Maddox, when she passes him in classes, the hallway, and at lunch, but she suspects there is something different about him other than that he is a Westsider and comes from the wrong side of town.

On a dare, Celeste and her friends go to a psychic’s shop for a reading. When it is Celeste’s turn for a fortune, the psychic grabs Celeste’s hands and warns, “Beware of a kiss under the full moon.” Celeste and her friends laugh and mock the fortune teller. But on her way home from their outing, Celeste is blinded by a blizzard. Disoriented, she finds herself deep in the woods bordering town. She is overcome by snowfall and unable to see anything. Above her hovers the glow of a full moon. Just then, she sees beady eyes staring back through the falling flakes. She finds herself in the midst of a pack of hungry wolves. The wolves begin to howl. She can’t outrun them, and the shortest tree branch is out of reach. They slowly approach her. At the last moment, a stranger pulls her from the hungry pack. He grabs a branch and fights the pack of wolves until they retreat. In the scuffle the stranger is bitten. It is Brandon Maddox.

Celeste is enamored by her hero and can’t get him out of her mind. Where Nash is a hero on the field and court, Brandon is a hero in reality. Celeste steals away from her friends to find Brandon, and they meet on a hilltop near his home. A cloudy sky lingers above them, and Celeste realizes she has fallen in love with a Westsider. But in the next few moments, Celeste will face an even bigger challenge than falling for a guy from the wrong side of town. As the two lean in to kiss, the clouds pass, exposing the glow of a full moon. Brandon feels strange and pulls away. Something is about to change—him.

UNEARTHLY

Author: Cynthia Hand

Synopsis: Clara has known she was part–angel ever since she turned fourteen two years ago. But now she is finally getting visions of what her Purpose—a rite of passage for every part–angel—is to be, and it happens to involve a gorgeous guy. Of course, there is the raging forest fire surrounding them, too. When Clara’s Purpose leads her family to Wyoming, Clara finds the boy of her visions, Christian, but complicating her mission are her growing feelings for another guy, Tucker. As the day in her visions draws closer, Clara discovers that her Purpose may play into a larger struggle between angels and Black Wings—fallen angels who spread sadness and misery wherever they go. But when the fire erupts and both Christian and Tucker are in danger, who will she choose to save?
From debut novelist Cynthia Hand comes a riveting tale full of supernatural powers, forbidden romance, and the choice between fulfilling your destiny or following your heart.

Author: Courtney Allison Moulton

Synopsis: When ordinary seventeen-year-old Ellie starts seeing reapers—monstrous creatures who devour humans and send their souls to Hell—she finds herself on the front lines of a supernatural war between Angels and the Fallen, and faced with the possible destruction of her soul.

A mysterious boy named Will, who has been waiting sixty years for her return, reveals she is the reincarnation of an ancient warrior, the only one armed with angelfire, and capable of fighting the reapers. He is an immortal sworn to protect her in battle. Her soul has been reborn again and again over the centuries to fight the reapers, and he’s been there for five hundred years to protect and fight alongside her. Now that Ellie’s powers have been awakened, a powerful reaper called Bastian has come forward to challenge her. He has employed a fierce assassin to eliminate her—an assassin who has already killed her once. At the same time, Ellie is falling in love with Will, even though they know their relationship should be impossible.

While balancing her dwindling social life and reaper–hunting duties, she and Will discover Bastian is searching for a dormant creature believed to be a true soul reaper. Bastian plans to use this weapon to destroy Ellie’s soul forever, not to mention the devastating ramifications for human souls. Now she must face an army of Bastian’s most frightening reapers, prevent the soul reaper from consuming her soul, and uncover the secrets of her past lives—including truths that may be too frightening to remember.

Especially when she has to split Jay’s time and attention with his new best friend, Mike, and Mike’s pesky younger sister—who happens to be obsessed with Jay.
Have you read all the books in Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight saga and are thirsty for more vampires? Here’s a list of Young Adult read alikes that feature vampires or have similar themes as Twilight.

Tantalize by Cynthia Leitich Smith
Like Twilight, Tantalize is about humans, vampires, and werewolves. The story is narrated by seventeen-year-old Quincie who, along with her uncle, is reopening the family restaurant in Austin, Texas with a vampire theme. When the chef at the restaurant is murdered, werewolf and Quincie’s best friend, Kieren, is the prime suspect.

Blood and Chocolate by Annette Curtis Klause
This might appeal to you if you’re looking for a story about forbidden love. Werewolf Vivian falls in love with Aiden, a sensitive human boy she meets at her new school. She finds herself caught between the worlds of humans and her fellow pack members.

The Silver Kiss by Annette Curtis Klause
Sixteen-year-old Zoe is going through an incredibly hard time – her mother is dying of cancer, her father is distant, and her best friend is moving away. She’s all alone when she meets the mysterious vampire Simon. He understands what she’s going through and they help each other with the emotions that come with death.

Boys that Bite (The Blood Coven series) by Mari Mancusi
For a funny take on vampires, try the adventures of identical twins Rayne and Sunshine. Sunny gets mistaken for her Goth twin and is bitten by a vampire. She has a limited time to reverse it, or she’ll be a vampire forever. The series starts with Boys that Bite and continues with Stake That, Girls that Growl, and Bad Blood.

Need by Carrie Jones
Need takes place on the opposite coast as Forks, in small town Maine where the weather is cold and snowy. Zara is sent to live with her grandmother after her stepfather passes away in the hopes that it will help her deal with her grief. She soon finds out that an evil pixie king is following her. The natural enemy of the pixie is the werewolf, but luckily there’s a population of them in town.

Look For Me By Moonlight by Mary Downing Hahn
This one starts with a premise that is similar to Twilight, but with a much more sinister vampire. Cynda is sent to live with her estranged father who runs an old inn on the coast of Maine. She falls for one of the guests, the mysterious and handsome Vincent. She knows there is something dangerous about him, but she is drawn to him anyway.

In the Forests of the Night (Den of Shadows series) by Amelia Atwater-Rhodes
Risika is a 300 hundred-year-old vampire and the story goes back and forth from when she was turned into a vampire and the present day. In the present, she must battle her vampire rival, Aubrey. This was first published in 1999 when the author was only 15 years old. There are three more books in the series: Demon in My View, Shattered Mirror, and Midnight Predator.

Vampire Diaries: The Awakening by L. J. Smith
If you like Edward, you will probably also be into Stefan, star of the Vampire Diaries series. He’s a hot, broody vampire with a fast car that’s trying to live as a “vegetarian.” While trying to blend into the community by attending high school, he meets Elena. It may sound like a Twilight rip-off, but it was actually published first. Stefan’s archenemy is also his brother, bad boy vampire Damon. Read my full review here.

Night World Number 1: Secret Vampire; Daughters of Darkness; Spellbinder by L.J. Smith
This collection of three stories is the first entry in the popular Night World series. Vampires, werewolves, witches, and shape shifters make up the secret society of the Night World. There are two rules for their world: don’t fall in love with a human and don’t tell anyone about the Night World.

House of Night series by PC and Kristin Cast
The House of Night series is what you get if you take the vampires from Twilight and combine them with Hogwart’s boarding school from Harry Potter. Teenagers with the vampire DNA mutation attend House of Night boarding schools where they transition into adult vampires, although not everyone survives the change. The series starts with Marked, and continues with Betrayed, Chosen, and Untamed.

Evernight by Claudia Gray
Sixteen-year-old Bianca is forced to attend the Evernight boarding school when her parents become professors there. She finds that she doesn’t fit in with the other students who all seem beautiful and sophisticated. She connects with another outsider, Lucas, and their forbidden relationship has been compared to that of Bella and Edward. There’s also a sequel titled Stargazer.

Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead
To continue the boarding school theme, Vampire Academy is about vampires and their guardians who train at St. Vladimir’s Academy. Rose is a halfblood who is training to become the guardian of Lissa, a mortal vampire. Along the way, Rose falls for her hunky fight instructor, Dmitri.

Wings by Aprilynne Pike
There are no vampires in this novel, but Twilight fans might like the love triangle between Laurel, nice guy David, and the faerie Tamini. Laurel meets David when she begins to attend public school for the first time as a sophomore. She’s different from the other kids, the most obvious difference being the wing-like blossom that sprouts from her back.

Glass Houses (Morganville Vampires series) by Rachel Caine
Morganville, Texas is home to Texas Prairie University and also happens to be run by vampires. Sixteen-year-old Claire isn’t aware of this when she enrolls for her freshman year at TPU. She ends up living off-campus at the Glass House where her new roommates clue her in about what is really happening in Morganville. The only similarity to Twilight is the vampires, but the younger crowd should enjoy it. Read my full review here.
