The cover for the final book of James Patterson series Maximum Ride, Nevermore was revealed by USA Today last week and I have to say it look really beautiful, don’t you think?

I haven’t read any of the books in the series, but this cover definitely has me curious to check out the first one, The Angel Experiment.

Maximum Ride is James Patterson’s first venture into the Young Adult world and has turned out to be pretty successful in the YA world as in the adult world.

For fans of the series you might be interested to know that Patterson promised that “all questions and situations will be resolved in Nevermore, including the love triangle between Max, her old boyfriend Fang and the new guy Dylan.”

Nevermore will be released on August 6th, 2012 (pre-order it on Amazon here), but if you really can’t wait to get your hands on it, a limited paperback edition of Angel (Book 7 in the series) has been released which includes a sneak peek at the first five chapters from Nevermore (that’s pretty cool!).

Finally, if you want to know more about Nevermore from the author himself, head over to USA Today to read their interview with him.

The Alex Cross film franchise reboot I, ALEX CROSS has found Matthew Fox. Deadline reports that the former ‘Lost’ hero has signed on to play assassin Michael Sullivan, AKA the Butcher of Sligo in the James Patterson adaptation. Sullivan takes it very personally when Cross (Tyler Perry) stops one of his killings, leading to Cross taking an equally personal interest in Sullivan.

Ed Burns is also joining the film to play Cross’ partner Tommy Kane. Rob Cohen will direct the film from a script originally written by Mark Moss and tweaked by Moss and Cohen. According to Deadline, the new script has twists not originally in the novel. Given that Michael Sullivan actually appears in Cross, not I, Alex Cross, I would definitely say there are new twists.

I’m curious to see Matthew Fox as this brutal a villain and I love that they seem to be using Cross as the basis for the film, but I was so excited by the idea of Idris Elba as Alex Cross that the Tyler Perry casting is a letdown.

What do you think?

James Patterson is probably unarguably the bestselling writer in America. The man cranks out novels across enough genres to make the rest of us pale to think of the effort and just gape at the sheer volume of work. The thing is, some of it is good and some of it is… just so so. I think some of Patterson’s forays into Young Adult Literature and the Urban Fantasy world are less successful than some of this other works. ANGEL: A MAXIMUM RIDE NOVEL is one of these.

It wasn’t always that way. The debut novels were all good, and that was true of the Maximum Ride Series as well. In fact the first three books were excellent and the next two good. This one is somewhat less so. I don’t know if it is just that the books long back and forth between Fang and Dylan is getting to me or if it’s just that the series itself is starting to peter out. Not every series needs to be hundreds of books long, and Angel just floundered. It had its exciting moments but, overall it was just not what the other books were.

The evil is busily convincing Max she has to save the world, push evolution forward and get together with Dylan. (Evil is not to be trusted as a matchmaker.) Meanwhile, Fang is gathering up his own happy band to solve things and it all comes to a bit of a head in the end.

I might sound a little less than thrilled by the whole thing, and I am. I wondered once or twice while reading the book just what Patterson was thinking. Max was not even the Max of former novels. I hate it when a good hero goes all blah. The ending was beyond disappointing. While I have enjoyed the books, I am not a huge fan of the series, but even so I was sorely disappointed by the end. For fans it might be crushing. All in all Angel: A Maximum Ride Novel is pretty much for hardcore fans only, and even then, be warned, you’re probably not going to be happy at the end.

Have you ever gotten the feeling when you were reading a book that the only reason the book was published was because the author was a “name”? You know the ones I mean. You bought it because John Doe is your favorite author and you just had to read his latest book in a favorite series, then you dive in and go “Um, what?” Welcome to WITCH & WIZARD: THE GIFT by James Patterson and Ned Rust.

Witch & Wizard: The Gift is the second in a series about Whit and Wisty Allgood and their ight, or rather survival against the totalitarian regime of the New Order. In the world of the New Order all freedoms are gone, everything good is pretty much gone and Whit and Wisty are struggling to get through a world bent on their destruction. Even as the power of The One Who Is The One grows, our Whit and Wisty are still The One’s biggest headache. They have escaped imprisonment and are working with the Resistance, but the New Order has other plans for them.

As I said, this is the second in the series. It has everything the first did, but somehow it fell short. Magic, action, peril and I kind of didn’t care. I kept reading, kept hoping for that moment when I engaged with the characters again and wanted them to triumph, or felt that little crash in my tummy when something awful had happened and I was waiting for them to escape, but it never did.

Witch & Wizard: The Gift is intended for the teen/ young adult audience, and I read a lot of novels in that age group, in fact a lot of the best writing seems to be cropping up there simply because it is such a wide open and hungry group of readers. I hope this book doesn’t put them off, I really don’t. It has everything that should make it a good, but it just isn’t that good. And when I got to the end and saw “To Be Continued” I was genuinely pissed. At least wrap the story. Yes, it’s a series, and they have threads that continue, but this kind of thing has led me to very nearly stop reading other authors before. To be continueds have their place, at the end of a novel is not one of those places.

All in all, if you read, and loved, the first like I did, you will probably want to read the Witch & Wizard: The Gift, just to find out where Whit and Wisty end up. I can’t guarantee, however, that you will want to read the third, and that’s kind of sad, you know?

At the same time, Assistant District Attorney Yuki Castellano is prosecuting the biggest case of her life—a woman who has been accused of murdering her husband in front of her two young children. Yuki’s career rests on a guilty verdict, so when Lindsay finds evidence that could save the defendant, she is forced to choose. Should she trust her best friend or follow her instinct?

THERE’S A DIFFERENT WAY TO DIE
Lindsay’s every move is watched by her new boss, Lieutenant Jackson Brady, and when the pressure to find the baby begins interfering with her new marriage to Joe, she wonders if she’ll ever be able to start a family. With James Patterson’s white-hot speed and unquenchable action, 10th Anniversary is the most deliciously chilling Women’s Murder Club book ever.

From the publisher:
Zara and Nick are soul mates, meant to be together forever. But that’s not quite how things have worked out. For starters, well, Nick is dead. Supposedly, he’s been taken to a mythic place for warriors known as Valhalla, so Zara and her friends might be able to get him back. But it’s taking time, and meanwhile a group of evil pixies is devastating Bedford, with more teens going missing every day. An all-out war seems imminent, and the good guys need all the warriors they can find. But how to get to Valhalla? And even if Zara and her friends discover the way, there’s that other small problem: Zara’s been pixie kissed. When she finds Nick, will he even want to go with her? Especially since she hasn’t turned into just any pixie. . . She’s Astley’s queen.

From the publisher:
Wendy Anderson and Hakiam Powell are at opposite ends of the spectrum—the social spectrum, the financial spectrum, the opportunity spectrum, you name it. Wendy lives in an all-white suburb of Philadelphia, where she’s always felt like the only chip in the cookie. Her dad, who fought his way out of the ghetto, doesn’t want her mingling with “those people.” In fact, all Wendy’s life, her father has told her how terrible “those people” are. He even objects to Wendy’s plan to attend a historically black college. But Wendy feels that her race is more than just the color of her skin, and she takes a job tutoring at an inner-city community center to get a more diverse perspective on life.

Hakiam has never lived in one place for more than a couple of years. When he aged out of foster care in Ohio, he hopped a bus to Philly to start over, but now he’s broke, stuck taking care of his cousin’s premature baby for no pay, and finding it harder than ever to stay out of trouble. When he meets Wendy at the tutoring center, he thinks she’s an uppity snob—she can’t possibly understand his life. But as he gets to know her better, he sees a softer side. And eventually—much to the chagrin of Wendy’s father and Hakiam’s cousin—they begin a rocky, but ultimately enlightening, romance.

This edgy story about a star-crossed couple features strong African American characters and sparkles with smart, quirky dialogue and fresh observations on social pressures and black-on-black prejudice.

Clara Knowles, Gloria’s goody-two-shoes cousin, has arrived to make sure the high-society wedding comes off without a hitch—but Clara isn’t as lily-white as she appears. Seems she has some dirty little secrets of her own that she’ll do anything to keep hidden. . . .

Lorraine Dyer, Gloria’s social-climbing best friend, is tired of living in Gloria’s shadow. When Lorraine’s envy spills over into desperate spite, no one is safe. And someone’s going to be very sorry. . . .

“I’ve struck it!” Mark Twain wrote in a 1904 letter to a friend. “And I will give it away–to you. You will never know how much enjoyment you have lost until you get to dictating your autobiography.” Thus, after dozens of false starts and hundreds of pages, Twain embarked on his “Final (and Right) Plan” for telling the story of his life. His innovative notion–to “talk only about the thing which interests you for the moment”–meant that his thoughts could range freely. The strict instruction that many of these texts remain unpublished for 100 years meant that when they came out, he would be “dead, and unaware, and indifferent,” and that he was therefore free to speak his “whole frank mind.” The year 2010 marks the 100th anniversary of Twain’s death. In celebration of this important milestone and in honor of the cherished tradition of publishing Mark Twain’s works, UC Press is proud to offer for the first time Mark Twain’s uncensored autobiography in its entirety and exactly as he left it. This major literary event brings to readers, admirers, and scholars the first of three volumes and presents Mark Twain’s authentic and unsuppressed voice, brimming with humor, ideas, and opinions, and speaking clearly from the grave as he intended.

From the publisher:
On a May afternoon in 1943, an Army Air Forces bomber crashed into the Pacific Ocean and disappeared, leaving only a spray of debris and a slick of oil, gasoline, and blood. Then, on the ocean surface, a face appeared. It was that of a young lieutenant, the plane’s bombardier, who was struggling to a life raft and pulling himself aboard. So began one of the most extraordinary odysseys of the Second World War.

The lieutenant’s name was Louis Zamperini. In boyhood, he’d been a cunning and incorrigible delinquent, breaking into houses, brawling, and fleeing his home to ride the rails. As a teenager, he had channeled his defiance into running, discovering a prodigious talent that had carried him to the Berlin Olympics and within sight of the four-minute mile. But when war had come, the athlete had become an airman, embarking on a journey that led to his doomed flight, a tiny raft, and a drift into the unknown.

Ahead of Zamperini lay thousands of miles of open ocean, leaping sharks, a foundering raft, thirst and starvation, enemy aircraft, and, beyond, a trial even greater. Driven to the limits of endurance, Zamperini would answer desperation with ingenuity; suffering with hope, resolve, and humor; brutality with rebellion. His fate, whether triumph or tragedy, would be suspended on the fraying wire of his will.

In her long-awaited new book, Laura Hillenbrand writes with the same rich and vivid narrative voice she displayed in Seabiscuit. Telling an unforgettable story of a man’s journey into extremity, Unbroken is a testament to the resilience of the human mind, body, and spirit.

Advertising pioneer and visionary Roger Sterling, Jr., served with distinction in the Navy during World War II, and joined Sterling Cooper Advertising as a junior account executive in 1947. He worked his way up to managing partner before leaving to found his own agency, Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce, in 1963.

During his long and illustrious career, Sterling has come into contact with all the luminaries and would-be luminaries of the advertising world, and he has acquired quite a reputation among his colleagues for his quips, barbs, and witticisms.

Taken as a whole, Roger Sterling’s pithy comments and observations amount to a unique window on the advertising world—a world that few among us are privileged to witness first—hand—as well as a commentary on life in New York City in the middle of the twentieth century.

A few “sterling” examples:

When a man gets to a point in his life when his name’s on the building,
he can get an unnatural sense of entitlement.

The day you sign a client is the day you start losing him.

Being with a client is like being in a marriage. Sometimes you get into it for the wrong reasons, and eventually they hit you in the face.

When God closes a door, he opens a dress.

Sterling’s Gold covers it all: business, marriage, and the taste of success made sweeter with a glass of something strong.

Dirk Pitt returns, in the extraordinary new novel from the #1 New York Times-bestselling author.

In A.D. 327, a Roman galley barely escapes a pirate attack with its extraordinary cargo. In 1916, a British warship mysteriously explodes in the middle of the North Sea. In the present day, a cluster of important mosques in Turkey and Egypt are wracked by explosions. Does anything tie them together? NUMA director Dirk Pitt is about to find out, as Roman artifacts discovered in Turkey and Israel unnervingly connect to the rise of a fundamentalist movement determined to restore the glory of the Ottoman Empire, and to the existence of a mysterious “manifest,” lost long ago, which if discovered again…just may change the history of the world as we know it.

For nearly five decades Barbra Streisand has been one of the singular figures in American entertainment. From the cabaret to the Broadway stage, from television and film stardom to her acclaimed work as a director, from the recording studio to the concert hall, she has demonstrated that the extraordinary voice that launched her career was only one of her remarkable gifts.

Now, in her first book, Barbra Streisand reveals another aspect of her talent: the taste and style that have inspired her beautiful homes and collections. My Passion for Design focuses on the architecture and construction of her newest homes, the dream refuge that she has longed for since the days when she shared a small Brooklyn apartment with her mother, brother, and grandparents. A culmination and reflection of Streisand’s love of American architecture and design between the eighteenth and twentieth centuries, the book contains many of her own photographs of the rooms she has decorated, the furniture and art she has collected, and the ravishing gardens she has planted on her land on the California coast. In addition to glimpses of her homes, Barbra shares memories of her childhood, the development of her sense of style, and what collecting has come to mean to her. My Passion for Design is a rare and intimate private tour into the world of one of our most beloved stars. It will be welcomed by her many fans and all lovers of the great achievements of American design.

From the publisher:
The Emperor of All Maladies is a magnificent, profoundly humane “biography” of cancer—from its first documented appearances thousands of years ago through the epic battles in the twentieth century to cure, control, and conquer it to a radical new understanding of its essence. Physician, researcher, and award-winning science writer, Siddhartha Mukherjee examines cancer with a cellular biologist’s precision, a historian’s perspective, and a biographer’s passion. The result is an astonishingly lucid and eloquent chronicle of a disease humans have lived with—and perished from—for more than five thousand years. The story of cancer is a story of human ingenuity, resilience, and perseverance, but also of hubris, paternalism, and misperception. Mukherjee recounts centuries of discoveries, setbacks, victories, and deaths, told through the eyes of his predecessors and peers, training their wits against an infinitely resourceful adversary that, just three decades ago, was thought to be easily vanquished in an all-out “war against cancer.” The book reads like a literary thriller with cancer as the protagonist. From the Persian Queen Atossa, whose Greek slave cut off her malignant breast, to the nineteenth-century recipients of primitive radiation and chemotherapy to Mukherjee’s own leukemia patient, Carla, The Emperor of All Maladies is about the people who have soldiered through fiercely demanding regimens in order to survive—and to increase our understanding of this iconic disease. Riveting, urgent, and surprising, The Emperor of All Maladies provides a fascinating glimpse into the future of cancer treatments. It is an illuminating book that provides hope and clarity to those seeking to demystify cancer.

The free app, available now on iTunes, will contain the latest news about the bestselling author and his books, plus exclusive fan previews, online purchasing, author interviews, and other exclusive content.

Right now users can read a free preview of the prologue of Cross Fire, which goes on sale November 15. The app also allows users to browse Patterson’s series (like Alex Cross, Women’s Murder Club) in order of release date.

There’s also a feature that will provide automatic reminders about forthcoming books and as well as regularly updated movie reviews, author videos, contests, and direct links to his websites—including www.JamesPatterson.com and www.ReadKiddoRead.com. Readers can also sign up to be a part of Patterson’s Facebook page and Twitter feed, and to receive newsletters and information on how to participate in Patterson’s philanthropic ventures, including his latest Book Dollars For Scholars program.

Patterson says, “Whether on paper, on a screen, or through an app like this one, it’s good to see that technology can actually enhance a reader’s interest in books, rather than diminish it. I think the app will provide new and interesting ways to experience my stories and allow readers instant access to a whole new e-universe of entertainment.”

Amazon announced yesterday that James Patterson has sold over 1 million Kindle ebooks (1,005,803 to be exact). He is only the second author to reach this mark, making him the second member of the “Kindle Million Club,” which recognizes authors whose books have sold over 1 million copies in the Kindle Store. This only includes paid Kindle sales, not free downloads.

Stieg Larsson, author of the Millennium Trilogy, was the first author to hit the 1 million mark. Larsson’s three books—The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, The Girl Who Played with Fire, and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets’ Nest—are among the top ten bestselling Kindle books of all time.

It’s actually pretty amazing that Larsson beat Patterson to the 1 million mark since Larsson has only published three books (albeit insanely popular ones) versus Patterson’s catalog of more than 65 books.

Patterson’s latest book, Don’t Blink, is currently number 31 on the Kindle bestseller list. All three of Larsson’s books are still in the top ten.
