Talk show host Ellen DeGeneres has purchased the movie rights to Jodi Picoult’s latest book, Sing You Home. According to Deadline, the funny lady will produce the movie along with Craig Zadan and Neil Meron.

Picoult’s books generally deal with controversial, “ripped from the headlines” type issues, and Sing You Home is no different. It’s about a lesbian couple, Zoe and Vanessa, fighting for custody of Zoe’s fertilized embryos. They are leftover from the in vitro fertilization procedure Zoe had when she was married to her ex-husband, Max. However, Max has joined an evangelical church since their divorce, and doesn’t want Zoe to have them. The book is also unique in that it comes with a CD of original music.

Ellen optioned Sing You Home with her own money, which is a sign of how passionate she is about the project. That is good news for Picoult, who was reportedly unhappy with how moviemakers changed the ending to My Sister’s Keeper. Picoult has also mentioned in interviews that Sing You Home is a deeply personal book, as her teenage son came out to her and her husband while she was writing it.
