I got my hands on a copy of The Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater when I was at BEA (Book Expo America) back in May. Most readers know Maggie Stiefvater because of her two previous book series, Shiver and Lament, but this is the first book of hers that I had read and I had a hard time putting it down. In fact this was the book I read on the plane back back home from BEA, it just grabbed me from the beginning.

The Scorpio Races has a really beautiful and original story. It takes place on the island of Thisby where ever November, the Scorpio Races take place. However unlike regular horse races, in this race the riders ride capaill uisce – water horses, which can make the competition quite fatal for some.

Unfortunately for Puck Connolly a young girl who lives on the island, this year she will have to compete in the race. The only woman to ever do so and it won’t be easy.

And then there is nineteen year-old Sean Kendrick, the returning champion, who is entering the race once again this year.

I think one of the reasons why I enjoyed The Scorpio Races so much is because of the beautiful imagery about the water horses and the island itself.

Puck is such a strong character that I found myself rooting for her throughout the story. And Sean is of course a great mysterious character and while he is technically the love interest, that story is really secondary, in fact it’s really more about Puck and Sean as outsiders fighting for something rather than them falling for each other.

The fact that chapters alternate between Puck’s point of view and Sean was also a great way to not only discover more about each character little by little, but also moving the story along.

Overall, as I mentioned I really loved this book and I would recommend it to fans Maggie Stiefvater, but also to anyone who loves horses, stories about overcoming obstacles and inspiring stories.

SPOILER WARNING: This review is for the third book in the Wolves of Mercy Falls trilogy, and contains spoilers for the first two books. If you are new to the series, start with my review of Shiver.

Maggie Stiefvater wraps up her Wolves of Mercy Fall trilogy—and Sam and Grace’s paranormal love story—in Forever. It’s almost spring and Sam is waiting for Grace to come back to him. He’s had a rough winter—stuck sharing a house with a moody, unpredictable Cole St. Clair and under suspicion in Grace’s disappearance. With the arrival of warmer temperatures, Grace eventually stays human long enough to be reunited with Sam. Unfortunately the good times are short lived, as there’s more trouble ahead thanks to Tom Culpeper. With the backing of a US Congressman, he’s organizing a hunt that could take out the entire pack. Sam, Grace, Isabel, and Cole will all need to work together if they want to find a way to save the pack.

While the first two books focused on Sam and Grace’s relationship and the obstacles they had to overcome, in Forever the challenge is for Sam to embrace his role as pack leader. Beck is now permanently a wolf and Cole is, well, Cole, so it’s up to Sam to protect the pack. And he struggles with that since they are facing such a serious threat and he’d much rather be planning for college and doing normal teenage stuff.

Like Linger, Forever is told from the alternating viewpoints of Sam, Grace, Isabel, and Cole. And also like the last book, Isabel and Cole add a much needed jolt of personality and sexual tension. Sam and Grace’s love story is great—comfortable and steady—while Cole and Isabel are larger than life characters. I could feel the sizzling chemistry between Cole and Isabel, and their complicated relationship was my favorite part of the book.

So is Forever a satisfying conclusion to the trilogy? For the most part, I think it is. I thought the ending felt a little rushed and I did hope for more resolution between Grace and her parents. The author doesn’t wrap up everything with a bow—there are lots of lingering questions—but I didn’t mind that she left things slightly open ended because it allows everyone to imagine different possibilities for the characters.

As usual, the highlight of Forever is Maggie Stiefvater’s poetic writing. She is so talented, and I’m looking forward to reading her next book, The Scorpio Races, which will be released in October.

I’m back with more news from Book Expo America (BEA) 2011 Day 3!!!

My shoulders are officially dead from carrying so many books. But on the positive side I did get my hands on some more exciting books, although I am now worried that my suitcase might end up being way too heavy for the trip back, yikes!

Once again I made my way to the Jarvis Center to get into the exhibition floor and get my hands on a signed copy of the book I am most excited about reading this year:

CROSSED by Ally Condie (The sequel to Matched)

And if you follow me on Twitter (@sandiedaemons) you might already know that I did get my signed copy, yay!

The rest of the day was pretty much spent walking around the exhibition floor, grabbing books here and there, and going into line to get autographed copies.

I decided not to attend any panels today, so I don’t have any new Buzz books to share with you, but I did want to share a few books that I got my hands on that I’m really excited about:

THE MEDUSA PLOT (Vespers Vs. Cahills, #1) by Gordon Korman – Part of The 39 Clues – August 30, 2011

Happy April Fools’ Day! From a fake Harry Potter TV show to a fake book cover from Maggie Stiefvater, today has been a good day for literary themed pranks. Here’s a roundup of my favorite book related April Fools’ Day jokes.

In the category of pranks I desperately wish were real, check out the trailer for The Aurors, a TV Show inspired by the Harry Potter books. This trailer by IGN is my favorite joke of the day, and judging by the response on Twitter, I’m not the only one who wishes it were real.

More The Aurors Videos

Author Maggie Stiefvater pranked her fans on Facebook by posting the cover of Litter, the fake fourth book in her Shiver series. If you haven’t read the books, they are about werewolves, and the phony book cover is done in the same style as the real covers. Check it out:

It was such a good prank that Stiefvater had to clarify:

Okay, so, I NEED to point out, I guess, that that cover of LITTER, the fourth SHIVER book, I just posted — it’s an April Fool’s joke. There is no fourth SHIVER book, and certainly not titled LITTER. I realized that despite shouting APRIL FOOL’S!!! in the comment threads, some folks were still taking it seriously. No puppies in FOREVER. That means NO PUPPIES FOREVER.

While the news that Billy Joel has pulled the plug on his upcoming memoir, The Book of Joel, made me sad, this story over at Vanity Fair made me laugh. They got their hands on the “first chapter” of Joel’s memoir and it goes a little something like this:

The time was 9 p.m. It was a Saturday. I was at a bar, and the regular crowd was shuffling in. Next to me was an old man nursing a gin and tonic.

He turned to me and said, “Son, can you play me a melody? I don’t remember it exactly, but it’s sad and sweet. I used to know it by heart when I was younger.”

Here’s a cool new ereader from LibraryThing and Amazon for the “hard-core bibliophile.” It feels like leather and smells like an old book! I would totally buy this.

And finally, today’s Shelf Awareness Daily newsletter was full of fake stories like “Riggios Let Go at Barnes & Noble” and “Bezos Stopped–Finally–in Southern Washington.” They also say that part of Borders reorganization includes “selling blank e-books.” Ha! Check out the full newsletter here.

So what were your favorite April Fools’ jokes today? Let me know in the comments!

Check out the newly released cover image for Forever, the third book in Maggie Stiefvater’s The Wolves of Mercy Falls trilogy. The first thing I noticed is that the cover is red, a sharp contrast to the two previous covers. The blood spatter is still there, though, just inside the “o” instead of dotting the “i” like on Shiver and Linger. We can also see both Sam and Grace on the cover.

The Forever cover makes me wonder a few things. Does the red cover signify anything (it’s a very warm color)? And does this mean that the interior ink will be red as well? I guess we’ll have to wait until the book is released in July 2011 to find out some of these answers. In the meantime, read what author Maggie Stiefvater has to say about the cover on her blog.

What do you think of the Forever cover? Let me know in the comments!

Linger is the follow-up to Maggie Stiefvater’s Shiver, and it is the second book in the Wolves of Mercy Falls trilogy. If, like me, you have only recently discovered Shiver and Linger, don’t worry, this is going to be a spoiler-free review. In Shiver (read my full review here), we meet Grace, a normal human girl, and Sam, a member of the local werewolf pack. In this mythology, the weres involuntarily transform into wolves when temperatures are cold, so they spend their winters as wolves and their summers as people. Sam desperately wants to stay human and have the opportunity to live a normal life with Grace, but the werewolf curse seems to keep getting in their way. Linger picks up where Shiver left off and continues the story of the Mercy Falls werewolf pack.

As much as I liked Shiver, I thought Linger was even better. There are a few new characters, and in addition to Sam and Grace’s points of view, we also hear from Isabel and Cole (a new werewolf). The changing narration took a little time to get used to, but each character has a distinctive voice, so I ended up enjoying it. Cole is a cool bad-boy type while Isabel is snarky and outspoken, which contrasted nicely with Grace and Sam. Maybe it’s because of the four different points of view, but Linger also seemed faster and more exciting than Shiver.

Overall, Shiver and Linger are wonderful books and examples of YA paranormal romance that can be enjoyed by both adults and teens. Since the two books have a lot of similarities to Twilight, it’s hard not to compare them to each other, but Stiefvater’s poetic writing sets her series apart. Like Twilight, romance is at the heart of Shiver and Linger, so I highly recommend them to anyone looking for a sweet love story.

Quotes from Linger:

This is a love story. I never knew there were so many kinds of love or that love could make people do so many different things.

I never knew there were so many ways to say good-bye.

You could write a book about things that you can’t find online.

I had this feeling that he and I, in this moment, were a car crash, and instead of putting on the brakes, I was hitting the accelerator.

Maggie Stiefvater puts a mature spin on YA paranormal romance in Shiver, the first book in The Wolves of Mercy Falls trilogy.

It’s told from the alternating viewpoints of Sam and Grace, star crossed lovers separated by the fact that Sam isn’t entirely human. He spends the cold Minnesota winters as a wolf, and is only a boy in the warm summer months. He loves Grace from afar, hanging around outside of her house in wolf form, watching her from a distance. Likewise, Grace has been obsessed with the wolves that roam the woods behind her house for years, particularly with the wolf with the yellow eyes, only recently realizing that they were anything more than wolves. Sam has never had the courage to talk to Grace during the summer, that is until she comes to his rescue. Their budding romance is hampered by the fact that winter is fast approaching and, although Sam is fighting to stay human, he and Grace may only have a short time to be together.

After hearing great things about Shiver I finally decided to read it, and I’m glad I did because it’s just a wonderful book. Stiefvater’s writing is beautiful and descriptive, creating a melancholy mood that matches the Minnesota winter landscape. She sets up the perfect amount of romantic tension between Sam and Grace, making Shiver a compelling read. The story moves slowly as the two teenagers get to know each other, but the tension kept me interested. However, if you are looking for lots of action and adventure, this probably isn’t the book for you.

As far as characters, I especially liked the pragmatic, responsible Grace, who has basically raised herself since her parents are preoccupied with their own lives. Sam is definitely more in touch with his feelings than Grace, in fact, I’d say he’s straight up emo. He’s constantly composing song lyrics or reciting poetry, which was one of the few parts of the book I didn’t enjoy (it seemed kind of cheesy to me).

Shiver is one of the better YA paranormal romances that I’ve read, and I recommend it to anyone who likes that genre. I’d especially recommend it to fans of Twilight (Team Jacob members, I’m talking to you). The second book in the trilogy, Linger, is available now (look for my review coming soon).

Quotes from Shiver:

- Grace: “It is possible to be in love with you just because of who you are.”

- Grace: “Books are more real when you read them outside.”

- Sam: “I’d found heaven and grabbed it as tightly as I could, but it was unraveling, an insubstantial thread sliding between my fingers, too fine to hold.”

- You’re beautiful and sad,” I said finally, not looking at him when I did. “Just like your eyes. You’re like a song that I heard when I was a little kid but forgot I knew until I heard it again.” For a long moment there was only the whirring sound of the tires on the road, and then Sam said softly, “Thank you.”

From the publisher:
The #1 New York Times-bestselling author presents a riveting novel where a canine search and rescue volunteer fights danger and finds love in the Pacific Northwest wilderness.

To most people, Fiona Bristow seems to have an idyllic life-a quaint house on an island off Seattle’s coast, a thriving dog-training school, and a challenging volunteer job performing canine search and rescues. Not to mention her three intensely loyal Labs. But Fiona got to this point by surviving a nightmare…

Several years ago, Fiona was the only survivor of the Red Scarf serial killer, who shot and killed Fiona’s cop fiancé and his K-9 partner.

On Orcas Island, Fiona found the peace and solitude she needed to rebuild her life. But all that changes on the day Simon Doyle barrels up her drive, desperate for her help. He’s the reluctant owner of an out-of-control puppy, foisted upon him by his mother. Jaws has eaten through Simon’s house, and he’s at his wit’s end.

To Fiona, Jaws is nothing she can’t handle. Simon, however, is another matter. A newcomer to Orcas, he’s a rugged and in-tensely private artist, known for the exquisite furniture he creates from wood. Simon never wanted a puppy-and he most definitely doesn’t want a woman. Besides, the lanky redhead is not his type. But tell that to his hormones.

As Fiona embarks on training Jaws, and Simon begins to appreciate both dog and trainer, the past tears back into Fiona’s life. A copycat killer has emerged out of the shadows, a man whose bloodlust has been channeled by a master with one motive: to reclaim the woman who slipped out of his hands…

From the publisher:
Heralded as “a modern day Jane Austen” by USA Today, National Book Award finalist and New York Times bestselling author Allegra Goodman has compelled and delighted hundreds of thousands of readers. Now, in her most ambitious work yet, Goodman weaves together the worlds of Silicon Valley and rare book collecting in a delicious novel about appetite, temptation, and fulfillment.

Emily and Jessamine Bach are opposites in every way: Twenty-eight-year-old Emily is the CEO of Veritech, twenty-three-year-old Jess is an environmental activist and graduate student in philosophy. Pragmatic Emily is making a fortune in Silicon Valley, romantic Jess works in an antiquarian bookstore. Emily is rational and driven, while Jess is dreamy and whimsical. Emily’s boyfriend, Jonathan, is fantastically successful. Jess’s boyfriends, not so much—as her employer George points out in what he hopes is a completely disinterested way.

Bicoastal, surprising, rich in ideas and characters, The Cookbook Collector is a novel about getting and spending, and about the substitutions we make when we can’t find what we’re looking for: reading cookbooks instead of cooking, speculating instead of creating, collecting instead of living. But above all it is about holding on to what is real in a virtual world: love that stays.

According to Jennifer Weiner’s website:
FLY AWAY HOME, my newest novel, will be published on July 13, 2010. It’s a story that will probably feel familiar to anyone who’s been following the news over the last year or two: a powerful politician is caught in an affair, and gives a press conference apologizing for his indiscretions with his long-suffering spouse at this side. The book picks up when the press conference ends — what becomes of the broken-hearted wife of a cheating senator? And how does the scandal affect his adult daughters?

From the publisher:
He knows everything about you—including the first place you’ll hide.

On a warm summer night in one of Boston’s working-class neighborhoods, an unthinkable crime has been committed: Four members of a family have been brutally murdered. The father—and possible suspect—now lies clinging to life in the ICU. Murder-suicide? Or something worse? Veteran police detective D. D. Warren is certain of only one thing: There’s more to this case than meets the eye.

Danielle Burton is a survivor, a dedicated nurse whose passion is to help children at a locked-down pediatric psych ward. But she remains haunted by a family tragedy that shattered her life nearly twenty-five years ago. The dark anniversary is approaching, and when D. D. Warren and her partner show up at the facility, Danielle immediately realizes: It has started again.

A devoted mother, Victoria Oliver has a hard time remembering what normalcy is like. But she will do anything to ensure that her troubled son has some semblance of a childhood. She will love him no matter what. Nurture him. Keep him safe. Protect him. Even when the threat comes from within her own house.

In New York Times bestselling author Lisa Gardner’s most compelling work of suspense to date, the lives of these three women unfold and connect in unexpected ways, as sins from the past emerge—and stunning secrets reveal just how tightly blood ties can bind. Sometimes the most devastating crimes are the ones closest to home.

From the publisher:
The hotly anticipated third novel of the Dublin murder squad from the New York Times bestselling author

Back in 1985, Frank Mackey was nineteen, growing up poor in Dublin’s inner city, and living crammed into a small flat with his family on Faithful Place. But he had his sights set on a lot more. He and Rosie Daly were all ready to run away to London together, get married, get good jobs, break away from factory work and poverty and their old lives.

But on the winter night when they were supposed to leave, Rosie didn’t show. Frank took it for granted that she’d dumped him-probably because of his alcoholic father, nutcase mother, and generally dysfunctional family. He never went home again.

Neither did Rosie. Everyone thought she had gone to England on her own and was over there living a shiny new life. Then, twenty-two years later, Rosie’s suitcase shows up behind a fireplace in a derelict house on Faithful Place, and Frank is going home whether he likes it or not.

Getting sucked in is a lot easier than getting out again. Frank finds himself straight back in the dark tangle of relationships he left behind. The cops working the case want him out of the way, in case loyalty to his family and community makes him a liability. Faithful Place wants him out because he’s a detective now, and the Place has never liked cops. Frank just wants to find out what happened to Rosie Daly-and he’s willing to do whatever it takes, to himself or anyone else, to get the job done.

From the publisher:
Gabriel Allon returns in the spellbinding new novel from the #1 New York Times-bestselling author.

Two families, one terrible secret, and a painting to die for…

It has been six months since Gabriel’s showdown with Ivan Kharkov. Now, having severed his ties with the Office, Gabriel has retreated to the Cornish coast with only one thing in mind: healing his wife, Chiara, after her encounter with evil. But an unspeakable act of violence once again draws Gabriel into a world of danger when an art restorer is brutally murdered and the newly discovered Rembrandt on which he is working taken. Gabriel is persuaded to use his unique skills to trace the painting and those responsible for the crimes; but, as he investigates, he discovers there are terrible secrets connected to the painting, and terrible men behind them. Before he is done, he will have undertaken a journey through some of the twentieth century’s darkest history-and come face-to-face with some of the same darkness within himself.

From the publisher:
In Maggie Stiefvater’s Shiver, Grace and Sam found each other. Now, in Linger, they must fight to be together. For Grace, this means defying her parents and keeping a very dangerous secret about her own well-being. For Sam, this means grappling with his werewolf past . . . and figuring out a way to survive into the future. Add into the mix a new wolf named Cole, whose own past has the potential to destroy the whole pack. And Isabelle, who already lost her brother to the wolves . . . and is nonetheless drawn to Cole.

At turns harrowing and euphoric, Linger is a spellbinding love story that explores both sides of love – the light and the dark, the warm and the cold – in a way you will never forget.

It’s finally here! Six years and almost 1000 pages have all led to this epic finale! With six of Ramona’s seven evil exes dispatched, it should be time for Scott Pilgrim to face Gideon Graves, the biggest and baddest of her former beaus. But didn’t Ramona take off at the end of Book 5? Shouldn’t that let Scott off the hook? Maybe it should, maybe it shouldn’t, but one thing is for certain all of this has been building to Scott Pilgrim’s Finest Hour! The sixth and final volume to indie comics most influential series in the last decade! Soon to be a major motion picture coming in August 2010 directed by Edgar Wright and starring Michael Cera.

Meet twenty-two-year-old Cherry Pye (née Cheryl Bunterman), a pop star since she was fourteen—and about to attempt a comeback from her latest drug-and-alcohol disaster.

Now meet Cherry again: in the person of her “undercover stunt double,” Ann DeLusia. Ann portrays Cherry whenever the singer is too “indisposed”—meaning wasted—to go out in public. And it is Ann-mistaken-for-Cherry who is kidnapped from a South Beach hotel by obsessed paparazzo Bang Abbott.

Now the challenge for Cherry’s handlers (über–stage mother; horndog record producer; nipped, tucked, and Botoxed twin publicists; weed whacker–wielding bodyguard) is to rescue Ann while keeping her existence a secret from Cherry’s public—and from Cherry herself.

The situation is more complicated than they know. Ann has had a bewitching encounter with Skink—the unhinged former governor of Florida living wild in a mangrove swamp—and now he’s heading for Miami to find her . . .

Will Bang Abbott achieve his fantasy of a lucrative private photo session with Cherry Pye? Will Cherry sober up in time to lip-synch her way through her concert tour? Will Skink track down Ann DeLusia before Cherry’s motley posse does?
