Okay, so the best ideas are borrowed…which is why I’m borrowing one from our friends over at Daemons TV They’ve started a fun game of “Would You Rather” with their favorite TV shows, and I’d like to try something similar with books. Let’s play a good ole’ fashion game of “Snog, Mary, Kill” with some of our favorite fictitious characters.

So here are your choices:

Mr. Darcy form Pride and Prejudice
Rhett Butler from Gone With The Wind
Holden Caulfield from The Catcher In The Rye

So, out of these 3 guys, who would you snog (trying to keep it PG folks), who would you marry, and who would you kill? Remember, each one has to be used only once, no exceptions. Here are my choices:

Snog: Rhett Butler (has a way with the ladies, but commitment issues)
Marry: Mr. Darcy (rich, faithful,handsome)
Kill: Holden (potty mouth, no ambition, currently lives in a mental institution)

What are your choices? Did you pick different from me?

If you are a fan of romantic comedy then Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice needs to be in your book collection immediately. The story is about the Bennets, a middle class family in England, around the year of 1813, which consists of Mr. and Mrs. Bennet and their 5 daughters. Jane and Elizabeth are the oldest and most responsible. Mary is the book worm, and Lydia and Kitty are the flirty troublemakers. The only thing that makes this family much different from a modern day family is that since the Bennet’s had no sons, their estate must be passed down to a male cousin (the creepy Mr. Collins). With the expense of having 5 mouths to feed, and the looming threat of getting turned out of their home should Mr. Bennet die, Mrs. Bennet is hugely invested in getting her daughters married (preferably to rich men). Enter the rich, single, and charming Mr. Bingly, who has just moved to town from the north and his rich, single, proud, friend Mr. Darcy. This is where the story begins. The focus is primarily on Elizabeth Bennet as she deals with love, deception, an embarrassing family, as well as her station in life as single, middle class, female in early 1800s England.

Although this is a short book (less than 300 pages), what makes it so wonderful is the loveable characters. Most people that are a fan of the book instantly fall in love with Elizabeth Bennet. I think it’s because a lot of us can relate to her. She’s just okay in everything (looks, singing, piano, wealth), yet it doesn’t seem to bother her. She’s much happier going for a walk or reading a good book than gossiping or chasing boys. At the same time, she’s not shy about expressing her opinion…to anyone. Her interactions with Mr. Darcy have been described as “a comedy of manners” which I would say is both accurate and completely, well, English.
