Happy Read Across America Day! Each year since 1998, the National Education Association (NEA) has set aside March 2 (Dr. Seuss’ birthday) as a day to get kids excited about reading. From the NEA website:

“NEA’s Read Across America is an annual reading motivation and awareness program that calls for every child in every community to celebrate reading on March 2, the birthday of beloved children’s author Dr. Seuss.

NEA’s Read Across America also provides NEA members, parents, caregivers, and children the resources and activities they need to keep reading on the calendar 365 days a year.”

This year the day is being celebrated in style as First Lady Michelle Obama reads Green Eggs and Ham to hundreds of school children at the Library of Congress with U. S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan. Green Bay Packer Donald Driver, Top Chef Host Padma Lakshmi, and actress Jessica Alba will also appear.

Random House has set up a special Seussville site with fun activities and there’s even a pledge site where people can log on and share their plans for Read Across America Day.

Love of reading is one of the greatest gifts my parents gave me and there’s nothing better than seeing kids of all ages excited about reading, so I hope you’ll celebrate Read Across America Day somehow. Oh, and Happy 107th Birthday, Dr. Seuss.

March 2nd is National Read Across America Day (in observance of Dr. Seuss’s birthday). It was started by the National Education Association. This is a great organization that inspires kids to read all across the country. In celebration, I’ve compiled a list of places I love to read. Maybe it will inspire somebody out there to pick up book today and read in their favorite location:

A Park
My bed
Cuddling with my dog
Exercising (audio books)
Under a tree
By a pool
A plane
A bookstore
A cafe

Where is your favorite place to read? Feel free to share your Read Across America stories!
