ABC’s hit show Castle is going to get even more meta with the release of a graphic novel based on the fictional Derrick Storm book series written by the fictional Richard Castle. Confused? Let’s recap: On the TV show, Nathan Fillion plays Richard Castle, the bestselling author of the Derrick Storm mystery series. During the first season of the show, Castle began shadowing NYPD detective Kate Beckett (played by Stana Katic) and she became his muse. He created her alter ego, Nikki Heat, and so far he has written two books based on her—Heave Wave and Naked Heat—which were actually released and attributed to “Richard Castle” (fans love to speculate on the identity of the ghostwriter).

So, much like Nikki Heat, Derrick Storm is now coming to bookstores—well, comic book stores. ABC is teaming up with Marvel to produce Castle: Richard Castle’s Deadly Storm. The 112-page hardcover graphic novel will be co-written by Brian Michael Bendis (Avengers, Ultimate Comics Spider-Man) and Kelly Sue DeConnick (Captain America and The Secret Avengers, Osborn). Lan Medina (Fables) will be handling the interior art and the cover art will be done by Carlo Pagulayan (Planet Hulk).

The press release for the new graphic novel quotes Richard Castle as saying, “I am honored and humbled to see Derrick Storm join the ranks of some of the greatest heroes of all-time. Being a part of the Marvel family is a childhood fantasy come true for me.”

Richard Castle will reveal the graphic novel cover (which you can see above) on the season finale of Castle, which is on tonight, May 16th, at 10PM on ABC.

Castle: Richard Castle’s Deadly Storm will be released on September 28, 2011. Castle’s third Nikki Heat book, Heat Rises, will be in bookstores on September 20th.

Mark your calendars, Castle fans, because Richard Castle’s third Nikki Heat book will be in bookstores on September 20th. Entertainment Weekly has the scoop on Heat Rises:

The bizarre murder of a parish priest at a New York bondage club is just the tip of an iceberg that leads Nikki Heat to a dark conspiracy that reaches all the way to the highest level of the NYPD. But when she gets too close to the truth, Nikki finds herself disgraced, stripped of her badge, and out on her own as a target for killers with nobody she can trust. Except maybe the one man in her life who’s not a cop. Reporter Jameson Rook.

In the midst of New York’s coldest winter in a hundred years, there’s one thing Nikki is determined to prove. Heat Rises.

Heat Rises will be the third book from Richard Castle, the character played by Nathan Fillion on ABC’s Castle. It follows Heat Wave (read my review) and Naked Heat (read my review). If you like the TV show, I highly recommend you check out the books too. They are really fun and they capture the chemistry between Castle (Jameson Rook) and Beckett (Nikki Heat) perfectly.

I’m not sure who is ghostwriting the Castle books, but I would love to find out. I think it’s hilarious that his bio and acknowledgements at the end of Naked Heat are written in character. Richard Castle even has an author page on Amazon that includes a picture of Nathan Fillion and a fake bio.

Have you read any of Richard Castle’s books? How do you think they compare to the TV show?

I recently mentioned in my Naked Heat review that one of my favorite TV shows is ABC’s Castle, which is about bestselling author Rick Castle and his muse, NYPD homicide detective Kate Beckett. The famous writer tags along with Beckett and her squad as they solve murders, and while he frequently makes a nuisance of himself, he also provides them with valuable insight. The successful show has spawned a series of books written by “Richard Castle” (Heat Wave, Naked Heat).

While I was watching the show Monday night, I was also on my laptop looking at the book trailer for JD Robb’s Indulgence in Death, and it suddenly occurred to me—Eve Dallas = Kate Beckett. Ok, that’s an exaggeration, but there are definitely a few similarities between the In Death series and Castle. Kate looks a lot like how I picture Eve, and I think the banter between her and Castle is really similar to that between Eve and Roarke. No wonder I like this show so much!

I can’t believe it took me so long to realize the connection between In Death and Castle (duh!). Jose always refers to the show as Murder, She Wrote and I’ve also heard people compare it to Moonlighting, but never In Death. Now that I’ve noticed it, it’s like I’m seeing the show in a whole new light, and I can’t stop comparing the two. Here’s what I’ve come up with:

Eve Dallas vs. Kate Beckett
Eve Dallas is described as a tall, thin woman in her thirties with whiskey colored eyes and short, tawny brown hair. Sounds a lot like Stana Katic, right?

Both are homicide detectives with the NYPD.

Eve Dallas became a police officer as a way to deal with the horrific abuse and violence of her childhood; Kate Beckett became a police officer as a way to deal with her mother’s murder.

Due to their pasts, both have the ability to empathize with victims and the need to stand for the dead.

Both are stubborn and fiercely independent.

And both partner with sexy male civilians, which leads me to…

Richard Castle vs. Roarke
While I love Richard Castle, I’ll be the first to admit that he’s no Roarke. He lacks Roarke’s dangerous quality and mysterious background (not to mention his lovely Irish accent and long hair). But the two men do share a few of the same qualities:

Both have a roguish charm that makes ladies swoon and men want to be their buddy.

Both have a thing for gadgets.

Both are rich and famous (although, unlike Roarke, Castle doesn’t own half the planet).

Castle and Roarke both use their fame and numerous connections to assist on homicide cases.

Roarke keeps Eve’s Auto Chef stocked with high quality coffee; Castle provides Beckett’s squad with espresso.

So what similarities between Castle and In Death have you noticed? Please feel free to add them in the comments!

My favorite part of Mondays is watching Nathan Fillion and Stana Katic on ABC’s Castle, so I was excited to pick up Richard Castle’s second Nikki Heat book, Naked Heat. Nikki Heat is, of course, the fictional character based on the fictional New York homicide detective Kate Beckett (it’s very meta). Hotshot magazine writer Jameson Rook (based on Castle) recently wrote an embarrassing article about Nikki that shared lots of personal details and made her out to be the star of the NYPD. This didn’t go over well with Nikki or the other members of her squad like Raley and Ochoa (who are collectively known as Roach). Nikki has been dodging Rook’s phone calls and avoiding him since the article came out—until he shows up at her crime scene and she’s forced to deal with him. The homicide Nikki Heat is working is that of murdered gossip columnist Cassidy Towne. There is a long list of celebrities with motive to kill Towne, so Heat has her work cut out for her. It’s a juicy case and if Rook wants back on the team, he will have to make amends (kind of like Richard Castle in the season premiere).

I thought Naked Heat was fun, entertaining and even better than its predecessor, Heat Wave. TV tie-in books don’t exactly have a reputation for being that stellar, but this one is really good (which makes me wonder who actually wrote it). The characters were interesting and the whodunit aspect of the case had me guessing right up to the end. It still felt like an episode of the show (the dialogue was pitch perfect), and you could see how Castle incorporated elements of cases from the show into the book. But it didn’t just feel like any average episode—the story was a good one that deserved its own novel.

If you love the chemistry between Castle and Beckett, you will love the smoking hot chemistry between Rook and Heat. The book captures their signature banter as well. I think Naked Heat is a MUST read for Castle fans, but I’d also recommend it to anyone who likes James Patterson.

Quotes from Naked Heat:

“Man, you hear those wackos on talk radio and you wonder where they live.”

“Know what I’m calling you?” said Raley. “The nut whisperer.”

“She’s got balls, this one.”

“Go ahead. Rip my bodice.”

September is here and that means the beginning of the fall publishing season. There are new books coming from John Stewart, James Patterson, and Janet Evanovich, plus two big authors—Audrey Niffenegger and Diana Gabaldon—are releasing graphic novels in September. The upcoming book I’m looking forward to the most is David Sedaris’ new book of animal fables, which will be out at the end of the month. So check out the September book releases I think you’ll be interested in.

Audrey Niffenegger, the New York Times bestselling author of The Time Traveler’s Wife and Her Fearful Symmetry, has crafted her first graphic novel after the success of her two critically acclaimed “novels-in-pictures.” First serialized as a weekly column in the UK’s Guardian newspaper, The Night Bookmobile tells the story of a wistful woman who one night encounters a mysterious disappearing library on wheels that contains every book she has ever read. Seeing her history and most intimate self in this library, she embarks on a search for the bookmobile. But her search turns into an obsession, as she longs to be reunited with her own collection and memories.

The Night Bookmobile is a haunting tale of both transcendence and the passion for books, and features the evocative full-color pen-and-ink work of one of the world’s most beloved storytellers.

Sam, Bonzi, Lola, Mbongo, Jelani, and Makena are no ordinary apes. These bonobos, like others of their species, are capable of reason and carrying on deep relationships—but unlike most bonobos, they also know American Sign Language.

Isabel Duncan, a scientist at the Great Ape Language Lab, doesn’t understand people, but animals she gets—especially the bonobos. Isabel feels more comfortable in their world than she’s ever felt among humans . . . until she meets John Thigpen, a very married reporter who braves the ever-present animal rights protesters outside the lab to see what’s really going on inside.

When an explosion rocks the lab, severely injuring Isabel and “liberating” the apes, John’s human interest piece turns into the story of a lifetime, one he’ll risk his career and his marriage to follow. Then a reality TV show featuring the missing apes debuts under mysterious circumstances, and it immediately becomes the biggest—and unlikeliest—phenomenon in the history of modern media. Millions of fans are glued to their screens watching the apes order greasy take-out, have generous amounts of sex, and sign for Isabel to come get them. Now, to save her family of apes from this parody of human life, Isabel must connect with her own kind, including John, a green-haired vegan, and a retired porn star with her own agenda.

Ape House delivers great entertainment, but it also opens the animal world to us in ways few novels have done, securing Sara Gruen’s place as a master storyteller who allows us to see ourselves as we never have before.

Diana Gabaldon’s brilliant storytelling has captivated millions of readers in her bestselling and award-winning Outlander saga. Now, in her first-ever graphic novel, Gabaldon gives readers a fresh look at the events of the original Outlander: Jamie Fraser’s side of the story, gorgeously rendered by artist Hoang Nguyen.

After too long an absence, Jamie Fraser is coming home to Scotland—but not without great trepidation. Though his beloved godfather, Murtagh, promised Jamie’s late parents he’d watch over their brash son, making good on that vow will be no easy task. There’s already a fat bounty on the young exile’s head, courtesy of Captain Black Jack Randall, the sadistic British officer who’s crossed paths—and swords—with Jamie in the past. And in the court of the mighty MacKenzie clan, Jamie is a pawn in the power struggle between his uncles: aging chieftain Colum, who demands his nephew’s loyalty—or his life—and Dougal, war chieftain of Clan MacKenzie, who’d sooner see Jamie put to the sword than anointed Colum’s heir.

And then there is Claire Randall—mysterious, beautiful, and strong-willed, who appears in Jamie’s life to stir his compassion . . . and arouse his desire.

But even as Jamie’s heart draws him to Claire, Murtagh is certain she’s been sent by the Old Ones, and Captain Randall accuses her of being a spy. Claire clearly has something to hide, though Jamie can’t believe she could pose him any danger. Still, he knows she is torn between two choices—a life with him, and whatever it is that draws her thoughts so often elsewhere.

Step into the captivating, passionate, and suspenseful world of The Exile, and experience the storytelling magic of Diana Gabaldon as never before.

From the publisher:
Ken Follett’s World Without End was a global phenomenon, a work of grand historical sweep, beloved by millions of readers and acclaimed by critics. Fall of Giants is his magnificent new historical epic. The first novel in The Century Trilogy, it follows the fates of five interrelated families-American, German, Russian, English, and Welsh-as they move through the world-shaking dramas of the First World War, the Russian Revolution, and the struggle for women’s suffrage.

Thirteen-year-old Billy Williams enters a man’s world in the Welsh mining pits…Gus Dewar, an American law student rejected in love, finds a surprising new career in Woodrow Wilson’s White House…two orphaned Russian brothers, Grigori and Lev Peshkov, embark on radically different paths half a world apart when their plan to emigrate to America falls afoul of war, conscription, and revolution…Billy’s sister, Ethel, a housekeeper for the aristocratic Fitzherberts, takes a fateful step above her station, while Lady Maud Fitzherbert herself crosses deep into forbidden territory when she falls in love with Walter von Ulrich, a spy at the German embassy in London…

These characters and many others find their lives inextricably entangled as, in a saga of unfolding drama and intriguing complexity, Fall of Giants moves seamlessly from Washington to St. Petersburg, from the dirt and danger of a coal mine to the glittering chandeliers of a palace, from the corridors of power to the bedrooms of the mighty. As always with Ken Follett, the historical background is brilliantly researched and rendered, the action fast-moving, the characters rich in nuance and emotion. It is destined to be a new classic.

In future volumes of The Century Trilogy, subsequent generations of the same families will travel through the great events of the rest of the twentieth century, changing themselves-and the century itself. With passion and the hand of a master, Follett brings us into a world we thought we knew, but now will never seem the same again.

From the publisher:
Featuring David Sedaris’s unique blend of hilarity and heart, this new collection of keen-eyed animal-themed tales is an utter delight. Though the characters may not be human, the situations in these stories bear an uncanny resemblance to the insanity of everyday life.

In “The Toad, the Turtle, and the Duck,” three strangers commiserate about animal bureaucracy while waiting in a complaint line. In “Hello Kitty,” a cynical feline struggles to sit through his prison-mandated AA meetings. In “The Squirrel and the Chipmunk,” a pair of star-crossed lovers is separated by prejudiced family members.

Once again David Sedaris shows us the most outrageous, tender, absurd sides of ourselves in his “profoundly funny, well-crafted stories that somehow, magically, bring home a major point about fidelity or guilt or love” (Christian Science Monitor on When You Are Engulfed in Flames).

Then Rebecca’s much younger look-alike brother, Ethan (known in thefamily as Mizzy, “the mistake”), shows up for a visit. A beautiful, beguiling twenty-three-year-old with a history of drug problems, Mizzy is wayward, at loose ends, looking for direction. And in his presence, Peter finds himself questioning his artists, their work, his career—the entire world he has so carefully constructed.

Like his legendary, Pulitzer Prize–winning novel, The Hours, Michael Cunningham’s masterly new novel is a heartbreaking look at the way we live now. Full of shocks and aftershocks, it makes us think and feel deeply about the uses and meaning of beauty and the place of love in our lives.

I’m a huge fan of the TV show Castle so I couldn’t resist picking up Heat Wave, the book that lead character Richard Castle is supposed to be writing on the show. The premise of both the book and the show is that a popular author is shadowing a New York homicide detective and he helps her solve cases. It may sound like Murder She Wrote but it’s actually a lot more fun because of the banter and romantic tension between the main characters. Heat Wave is what I would call a fun, guilty-pleasure book because it’s a lot like reading an extended episode of Castle.

For those familiar with the show, all the main characters except Alexis are represented but with different names. Beckett is Nikki Heat and Castle is Jameson Rook, a famous reporter with lots of female fans. While a heat wave is making New York City unbearable, Heat is investigating the death of a wealthy real estate developer with more than a few similarities to Donald Trump. He fell from the balcony of his fancy apartment and they must figure out if he jumped or if he was pushed.

The main attraction of Castle is the ridiculously charming Nathan Fillion and the chemistry between him and Stana Katic. I was concerned that this wouldn’t translate into the book, but for the most part I think it did. Like I said before, Heat Wave reads just like an episode of Castle and I could totally picture the actors as the characters in the book. If anything, the sexual tension between Rook and Heat is even more amplified than between Castle and Beckett. I definitely recommend Heat Wave to Castle fans. It might not be great literature but it’s a whole lot of fun.
