So today I was at a dog shelter looking for a new family member when I was instantly taken with the cutest, scruffiest, terrier mix you’ve ever seen. My husband asked me what it was about the mutt that I loved so much and without hesitation I responded that it reminded me of Risby, the dog made popular in the Henry Huggins series by Beverly Cleary. Henry named his dog Risby because when he found him he was so skinny you could see his ribs. So this got me thinking of all the dogs made popular by fictional books and comics. Here are some of my favorites, and I’m sure I’m leaving out a ton so please let me know your favorites as well!
Marley – Made famous in the book and film by Josh Grogan. Marley is a yellow Lab who, due to his rowdy nature, is constantly getting himself in trouble.
Satchel – The half lab/half Shar Pei made famous by the hilarious comic series “Get Fuzzy”. Satchel is good natured, a little slow on the up take (mostly when it comes to his cynical feline house-mate Bucky), and a little overweight. I love him because he’s a good friend and a fan of Harry Potter.
Odie – Before Satchel, there was Odie. Odie’s claim to fame is of course, Garfield. Similar to Satchel, Odie is a nice dog that isn’t the sharpest tool in the shed. He also gets bullied by his feline house-mate, Garfield.
Fang – Hagrid’s dog in Harry Potter. He’s known for being huge, slobbery, and sweet.
Old Dan & Little Ann – The brave, red hunting hounds made famous in “Where the Red Fern Grows”. I had to read this book in the 3rd grade and thought it was so sad!
Padfoot – This is one of my fav dogs. Padfoot is actually Sirius Black’s animagus (meaning when Sirius turns into an animal its Padfoot) from the Harry Potter series.
