House‘s Hugh Laurie is taking a bit of a departure for his next role. Deadline reports he will be playing Mr. Watts in the film adaptation of Lloyd Jones’ novel MISTER PIP. Shooting begins in New Zealand in May.
Mister Pip takes place on the small copper mining island of Bougainville, Papua New Guinea, where most of the residents, including all the teachers, have fled. Mr. Watts, the sole remaining white man, remains, becoming the teacher for many of the remaining native children of the island. He reads to the children from Charles Dickens’s novel Great Expectations, fascinating them, including the main character, Matilda, with the young orphan Pip’s travels through London.
Andrew Adamson (Shrek, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe) wrote the adaptation and will direct the film. Just as a side note, Laurie read an audiobook of Great Expectations some years ago and it was wonderful, so I love this casting.
How do you think Mister Pip will be as a movie? Is Hugh Laurie a good fit for Mr. Watts?
