The Shadowing: Hunted

The first book in a new series, THE SHADOWING: HUNTED was a great way to kick start this new creepy collection! Adam Slater mixes horror and macabre with creepy settings and wonderfully scary situations; I didn’t want to put the book down!

The Shadowing: Hunted states that “Once every century, the barrier between the human world and the demon realm begins to break down. Creatures gather, anxiously waiting to cross the divide, to bring death and destruction from their world to ours. This time is called The Shadowing.” What does this mean for our main character Callum Scott?

Nothing that is overly good.

Callum has always been able to see ghosts but for the most part has tried his best to ignore them. He doesn’t want this gift, he strives to be normal. However once his visions turn towards murdered children, Callum decides that he can’t ignore his talent any longer. He’s not just experiencing visions, he’s being hunted. With the help of a friend and his grandmother, Callum sets out to find what is lurking in the dark.

Adam Slater tip toes around the line of the supernatural and the “real” world beautifully in The Shadowing: Hunted. I’m pretty desensitized to horror and ghost stories, and there were parts of this novel that gave me the chills and had me checking over my shoulder to be sure I was still alone in the room. That is the mark of an excellent book.

While the writing felt somewhat simple at first Slater’s style fits the genre perfectly. Slater does something that has been lacking in Young Adult fiction lately – he brings in supernatural creatures that aren’t “mainstream”. You won’t find vampires or werewolves here! Instead we’re talking Grims, Chime Children, and the Born Dead – all creatures that even those that are versed in the occult will have a problem identifying.

I cannot wait for more of The Shadowing series. Creepy and characters that are well developed and thought out make this one of the best horror novels I’ve read in a while.
